Birchbox May 2017 Unboxing and Product Reviews

Birchbox May 2017 was about making small changes that can have big impact in our routines, such as I guess changing or trying new cosmetics. The theme was “it’s all in the details”. I honestly didn’t know what to expect from the theme, it is very general and any cosmetic product would fit.

The box design this month was very beautiful, looking a little bit like marble with rose golden lines. I love that it was a draw box again this month and not just a standard top lid gift box.

Birchbox 2 May 2017

And without further ado the products included this month were, from left to right as shown in the picture, a brush, a hair mask, a face cleanser, a mascara and an eye shadow. So let’s go in a little more detail as to how each product performed.

Bear in mind that these are my personal opinions and as beauty is a very personal thing, we all have different skin, requirements and biological build which can influence things. What worked for me might not work for you and vice versa, please leave your comments below!

Spectrum Collections Marbleous C06 Tulip Eye Contour Brush

Spectrum Collections Marbleous C06 Tulip Eye Contour BrushWho doesn’t love brushes, this is a lovely item to find in a subscription box and it is a product that will last you a long time. This was one of the two full size products in this month’s box and I have to say I was impressed. The brush doesn’t look cheap at all, it is very soft, blends nicely and is very well presented. I love the white pink-golden colours! It is apparently supposed to be an eye contour brush but for me I felt it was too thick for eyes. It is made of tapered synthetic bristles and is indeed very fluffy. I will definitely use this one for a while but it won’t be for eye shadow blending for sure unless I’m going monochrome. This full size brush retails for £4.99 which is amazing value for it’s quality. SCORE = 8/10.

Kueshi Hair Mask Shine and Volume

Kueshi Hair Mask Shine and Volume

At 50mL this is a very good size product for a subscription beauty box, especially for Birchbox which is not known for large samples. This mask suppositively gives your hair shine and volume. I did notice a little extra volume but not too much and my hair was left very nicely shiny and soft.

This product smells really nice, but rather unexpected for a hair mask. I suggest you have dinner before using this because you will want to have dessert! It smells somewhere between vanilla custard with caramel and it has a texture somewhere between a white cream and a gel. It immediately made my hair softer and I love that you only need to leave this on for 3 minutes as opposed to the usual hair mask times of 5-10 minutes. No one wants to wait in the shower for 10 minutes…

It apparently helps with straightening your hair and provides it with much needed hydration from ingredients such as jojoba oil and shea butter. This is a product for damaged hair and let’s face it we could all use a bit of hair love. The packaging is simple but nice and practical. I can still smell the custard… SCORE = 8/10.

Dr Brandt Pores No More Cleanser

Dr Brandt Pores No More Cleanser

If you have oily skin like me then you feel that your pores are the size of a crater and you are constantly annoyed by blackheads. Yes I feel you and I was very excited to receive this product. This is supposed to be a gentle daily wash that also minimises and removes pesky pores. And if that wasn’t enough to make you excited it is also supposed to control oil and refine uneven skin.

It is very difficult to judge whether it removed blackheads (strongly doubt it) or it protects against them but it definitely left my skin nice and clean. The packaging is very simple but has an elegant feel to it and I kinda love that it has a blue cap. Don’t know why but it does stand out!

I usually put face cleansers to the test by trying to remove difficult make up with them but I must admit I haven’t tried with this one, I’ve only used it on clean face. There is something about this product, maybe the whole blackhead removal thing, that feels like it should be used almost like a treatment on clean skin. This product is a white, silky like, watery gel with a smell that I can’t quite define. It doesn’t smell like a standard cosmetic/cream but a little more closely to a medicine type product (not in a bad way). Maybe that’s why I felt it was an after treatment cleanser. SCORE = 6/10.

Doucce Punk Volumizer Mascara

Doucce Punk Volumizer Mascara

If you subscribe to more than one beauty box you will probably never have to buy a mascara again. This is a type of product that comes up frequently and it’s great.

This specific mascara was quite good, it definitely added a lot of volume to my lashes and it stayed all day. It didn’t leave any black bits behind or feel heavy or sticky. The wand applicator is fairly thick and it accentuates every single lash. What it lacks in not being waterproof it makes up with the packaging. I really like the oval shaped black and red packaging. It doesn’t look or feel cheap, especially the applicator. The wand does give you a sense of value as it is not the standard thin plastic! SCORE = 8/10.

Marsk Mineral Eyeshadow in Vanilla Frosting

Marsk Mineral Eyeshadow in Vanilla Frosting

This was a preview product that I’ve chosen last month. There were two choices, black or white named Fifty Shades and Vanilla Frosting respectively. Obviously as you can see I went with vanilla frosting as there are a lot more things you can do with white eye shadow than black.

This is apparently a full size product that retails for £14.49. I felt that this product was way to small to be full size and I wouldn’t have payed the money for it. I am definitely not beyond paying that kind of cash or even more for a single eye shadow but I would then want a little more quality or branding.

The powder was too translucent to use on its own as a colour even if you pack it a few times. There is some fall out but it is expected with non mat colours. This was a shiny white that I would happily use for eyebrow bone highlight or inner eye corner highlight. This is definitely more of a highlighter/brightener than a stand alone eye shadow. The packaging is simple, it does the job but there isn’t anything special about it. I would have definitely preferred it if this was a pressed powder to avoid some of the mess. Since I can use it as a highlighter I am ok with the lack of solid pigmentation but if the black one is as translucent as this one I would have been very disappointed. SCORE = 5/10.

Overall this box was much better than I expected. I liked some of the products and rated them highly which I haven’t done for Birchbox products in a while. Very pleased this month.

Initial box score, in terms of products and first feelings = 7/10

Overall box score after product testing (a sum of product scores) = 7/10

Star product = Spectrum Collections Marbleous C06 Tulip Eye Contour Brush.
