Glossybox May 2017 – Unboxing and Product Reviews

Glossybox May 2017 was dedicated to essential beauty products with a “the good basics” theme. The design of the box was as always the standard pink Glossybox but that’s ok, these boxes still make amazing storage and gifting options. This month’s box also included a £50 Mockberg voucher which is, surprisingly, valid until April 2018! Although £50 might sound a lot, Mockberg watches are around £150 (the cheapest) so still a reasonable amount to pay if you want to use this voucher. Their watches look lovely though but there isn’t a very big range to choose from at the moment. Might hold on to this one for a while.

The products included this month were, from left to right as shown in the picture, a nail varnish top coat, a body scrub, a foot cream, a blush and a multiple use balm. So let’s go in a little more detail as to how each product performed.

Glossybox May 2017

Bear in mind that these are my personal opinions and that beauty is a very personal thing, we all have different skin, requirements and biological build which can influence things. What worked for me might not work for you and vice versa, please leave your comments below!

Revlon Gel Envy Diamond Top Coat
Revlon Gel Envy Diamond Top CoatEveryone needs a clear top coat, this is a lovely product to find in a beauty box. And of course, extra points go to the fact that this is a Revlon top coat, which is obviously a reputable brand.

The packaging is quite nice with a lot of emphasis on the “diamond” look. This top coat is appparently Revlon’s toughest top coat which is allegedly shatter-proof and gives any colour worn underneath a diamond-like 3D-shine.

I have to be honest, it looked like any other top coat and it lasted as long as any other top coat. So a little disappointed with the claims. It definitely did not make my nail varnish last longer. It lasted anywhere between 1-3 days depending on what I was doing throughout the day, so pretty standard like any other top coat. It didn’t last any longer on its own in fact when it came off it didn’t break in pieces but rather came out in big portions as one big piece, almost like skin peeling off. So nails are completely ruined no chances of patching them up. Maybe that’s what they mean by shatter proof?

Overall, it is not a bad top coat and I will use it until its empty, it just doesn’t last any longer or does anything extra as it might claim. It does come off pretty easily though when using nail varnish remover so you don’t have to rub your nails for ages. Scores a point there.  This is a full size product which retails for £7.99. SCORE = 6/10

Scrub Love Active Charcoal Body Scrub Cucumber & Bamboo
Scrub Love Active Charcoal Body Scrub Cucumber & Bamboo
Definitely another essential here, everyone needs a body scrub. The packaging is nice, not very traditional for a scrub but it works. It has one of those push the two sides together bag seals and it does work pretty well. The outer packaging is water proof so as long as the bag is sealed you won’t destroy the scrub. It is a pretty package.

The scrub inside is a black and white solid with a strong smell of…well the first thing that came to mind was tea! Not a bad smell but not incredibly attractive either.

The scrub is quite harsh actually and it can be painful if you have sensitive skin or using it on sensitive areas and the black stuff appears to dissolve making your skin black. It comes off with water of course but it still feels like there is something left behind. I used soap to wash my skin after using it as I felt there was something still there. Nothing sticky or anything like that, just a not clean feeling. My skin was slightly softer afterwards.

This is supposedly 100% natural, vegan and vegeterian friendly and it does not contain plastic micro-beads that harm aquatic life or parabens. It is also not tested on animals and is suitable for all skin types.

For me the not clean feeling and the smell just didn’t do it but that’s personal taste. I’d love to try another scent from this range. SCORE = 7/10

-417 Foot Nourishing Cream
-417 Foot Nourishing Cream

This cream is everything you need after a long day standing or walking. It has a nice sweet smell and a white cream texture. It gets absorbed by the skin quickly and doesn’t leave any oil behind.

It doesn’t help prevent blisters or dead skin on feet but it does give you a nice moisturising feeling. Definitely something that is needed as sandal season is approaching!

The packaging is basic but it works and although to me it looked like a tanning product (maybe because of the yellow colour?) it is actually a nice foot cream. Good excuse to give yourself a little foot massage!  SCORE = 7/10

Ruby Powder Blush in Coral

Ruby Powder Blush CoralAgain, another basic. Glossybox has definitely hit the theme with the products included. Everyone should have a blush.

The packaging is very basic, plastic and a little on the cheap looking side but it does the job. The writing on it “Ruby Blush” did start to fade off very quickly (after 2 uses!). After 4 uses the writing came off completely meaning that I am probably going to forget what this is and mix it up with eye shadows! It is a similar size, a nice colour and similar packaging!

It doesn’t feel like much money was invested in this product. It is super thin and very hard to believe that this is a full size product that retails for £14.99. Yes you read this right. I would absolutely not pay that for this tiny blush that is thinner than my phone! It is supposed to be 2.5g but it definitely doesn’t look it. Maybe it is very well pressed?

Well if that was the case it wouldn’t come off so abundantly when used. A few, or maybe 1 swipe of your brush will pick up a lot of product so you don’t need much of it. I am not sure though if that’s because it is very pigmented or if it is because so much of it comes off. Maybe both?

Otherwise, it is not a bad blush. It lasts for hours and the light coral colour, although it might look daunting, gives a very nice summery look. One more product I will use until it’s empty but I would not pay the cash for it. For £15 at least give us nicer packaging! With that being said, it is very travel friendly. Contains vitamin E. SCORE = 6/10

Dr PawPaw Original Balm

Dr Pawpaw Original BalmThis product is a multi usage one meaning that you could use it as a lip balm, a skin hydrator, a hair styling product and an oil for nails and cuticles.

I usually don’t like 3 (or more) in 1 products because they usually try to achieve things of different functions all in 1 and they often fail. This one however does work for all things claimed. It is especially lovely for nails and cuticles but also works for hair if you are stuck somewhere with a freezy mess that you must contain! I wouldn’t use this as my primary hair product but it is one of those things that you might want in your hand bag instead of having 2-3 products on the go.

It also works on the lips, although as expected it feels quite oily. It is not sticky though and it does give a hydrated feeling. Again I wouldn’t use this as my primary lip balm but if I was out and forgot to take a balm with I would definitely pop this on. This can also be used as an eyebrow tamer. Personally, I think that this works best as a nail and cuticle oil.

The packaging is a standard, very yellow, tube with black writing. I wouldn’t call it pretty and maybe it is slightly on the uglier side. But this means that you won’t confuse this one with any other creams and you will easily find it in your handbag!

It contains aloe-vera and olive oil and is cruelty free and vegan friendly. It is a 4 ingredient product and although this might sound useless and super cheap, there is something nice about its simplicity. Sometimes simple things work! This is a full size product (25mL) that retails for £6.95. A very good price indeed. SCORE = 9/10

Overall I liked the contents of this box, as always Glossybox is consistent with producing nice interesting boxes and I cannot complain when 3 out of 5 products are fullsize and the other 2 are travel size as opposed to sample size!

Initial box score, in terms of products and first feelings = 7/10

Overall box score after product testing (a sum of product scores) = 7/10

Star product = Dr PawPaw Original Balm.
