Look Fantastic July 2017 Beauty Box – Unboxing and Product Reviews

Once again the Look Fantastic box was the first to arrive out of all four Beauty Boxes I subscribe to (Birchbox, Glossybox, Look Fantastic and Cohorted) so once again brownie points for fast dispatch Look Fantastic.

July’s Look Fantastic Subscription Beauty Box had a “Pretty in Paradise” theme. The theme is very interesting and goes well with more natural looking make up and shades or skin care products. That’s exactly what this box contained so they definitely hit the theme vs products combo.

Look Fantastic July 2017

This month’s quote inside the box, under the lid, was “If you have good thoughts, they will shine out of your face like sun beams and you will always look lovely”. Well I don’t know about positive thoughts but in general a positive attitude can come across physically in the body language and face appearance.

Once again though, the best thing about this box is the actual box design itself. Absolutely gorgeous as always. This month’s box design has a palm tree print with green leafs and gold highlights and the “pretty in paradise” theme in the middle.

This month the box contained 7 products (1 more than usual) and the two monthly magazines that always accompany this box, a small Beauty magazine and a travel size, full version of ELLE magazine. Good value for money as always.

From left to right, the products were: a hair cream, a sunscreen, a highlighter pencil, a beauty shot, a toothpaste, a bronzer and a toner.

So let’s dive in a little more deeply into how each product performed after a week’s use. Bear in mind that these are my personal opinions and as beauty is a very personal thing, we all have different skin, beauty requirements and biological build which can influence things. What worked for me might not work for you and vice versa. If you tried any of these please leave your comments below!

Morrocanoil Hydrating Hair Styling Cream

Morrocanoil Hydrating Hair Styling CreamThis is a hair styling cream that is supposed to be used on clean hair when damp or even when dry. It is supposed to nourish, smooth, condition, moisturise and even help manage your hair.

The cream has a standard hair cream texture but is light beige or even pale peach coloured which is a little unusual for hair products. It is packaged in a standard turquoise tube of good quality and the branding is quite clear.

It contains Argan oil which supposedly adds shine and the cream is suitable for all hair types. I have to say the whole Argan oil promotion vs what is says at the front in big letters “Moroccan oil” is a little confusing. I wish they just called the company “Argan oil” instead.

Anyhow, this was a nice hair styling cream. It did help manage hair and it made my hair a little soft. You only need a very small amount so don’t go overboard or you do risk making your hair looking dirty. I didn’t notice the extra shine and of course I cannot comment on whether it hydrates hair or not as this is something that would have to be investigated on a clinical laboratory level.

The cream smells quite sweet, nothing specific I can identify, but it is a pleasant smell. I will use this cream until it is out but I can’t say it is so special that I would buy it. SCORE = 7/10

Mimitika Face Sunscreen SPF 50

Mimitika Face Sunscreen SPF 50This is a very cute little face sunscreen tub and quite unusual to find a sunscreen packaged like this. Definitely an interesting product. I have to say though the packaging and maybe the branding as well didn’t give me the “this is a good brand” feeling, it looks cheap and a little childish and I’m not sure I want to put cheap sunscreen on my face.

Nevertheless, it is a white cream that smells quite sweet, it has some kind of oil smell that I can’t quite put a name on. It feels nice to apply and it doesn’t leave a sticky residue.

I love that it is SPF 50, can’t go wrong with that, as much protection possible for you face skin is definitely the way to go. Check out my post on “Everything you need to know about sunscreens and SPF”.

Mimitika Face Sunscreen SPF 50 2This face sunscreen apparently enhances tanning and apparently covers both UVA and UVB. I’m not sure I like the fact that it enhances tanning, I like a brighter looking face and while I would want it to match my body colour I wouldn’t want it to be darker than my body skin! I’d rather it was the other way round. Darker body, lighter face skin. So I’m not sure how much I trust this sunscreen.

I haven’t been able to use this to tell you how much it actually enhances tanning because the weather has been pretty bad here these days. But to be honest, I think I would stick with a face sunscreen that I know and trust to do a good job. There is something about this one’s presentation, branding and properties that just doesn’t sit very well with me. If you’ve tried it let me know!

SCORE = 6/10

Jelly Pong Pong Bare Necessities Highlighter Pencil

Jelly Pong Pong Bare Necessities Highlighter Pencil.jpg

Jelly Pong Pong Bare Necessities Highlighter Pencil 2

Even though the name says “Highlighter pencil” this pencil’s writing is not particularly shiny it is more appropriately used in the same way as white pencils, to highlight eye corners by adding a lighter colour. The pencil colour is actually a pink colour and so apparently you could use it as a concealer as well. I tried using it as a concealer to colour balance darker blue/purple patches in the same way you would use a salmon coloured concealer to colour correct but I have to say the texture of the pencil is too much like a pencil, too think and not very spreadable as a concealer needs to be. It just didn’t feel very comfortable to wear under the eye.

This is just an inner corner pencil in my opinion just to add a little brighter colour around your eyes without it being as obvious as a white pencil. For that it does work well. It doesn’t last all day and it rubs off easily. It doesn’t smudge though, just fades away. It is water proof but obviously if you rub it when it’s wet it does come off. It has a faint cosmetic pencil smell that is pleasant.

Jelly Pong Pong Bare Necessities Highlighter Pencil 3

The outer design of the pencil looks and feels quite cheap though. The pencil arrived in a complete see-through plastic packaging and you could see before I even unwrapped it that the writing on the pencil was faded in some parts. I wonder then how quickly it will fade after usage.

Interestingly, the pencil writes in a peachy colour after one and two layers but turns a strong pink looking if you layer it up (see picture). It does reflect light if you take a picture with flash so it looks more like a highlighter then which is pretty but be aware of that and don’t use this to draw all over your face or eyes because those pictures will end up looking a little freaky!

Other than that it is a nice pencil but again nothing so wow that I would go out of my way to purchase. SCORE = 6/10

Imedeen Advanced Beauty Shot Collagen and Vitamin C

Imedeen Advanced Beauty Shot Collagen and Vitamin CThis is a beauty shot, a small drink of collagen and vitamin C that you are supposed to have whenever you wish to enhance your skin’s texture and health. I would strongly recommend you read my post “Collagen supplements for fitness and beauty – Are they worth your money”.

Long story short, there is no scientific evidence that these shots work in fact there is a lot of evidence that collagen gets digested and therefore doesn’t actually make it to the skin intact. Anyhow, it doesn’t harm to have the shot but don’t expect any amazing results and definitely don’t spend a fortune on these type of products.

This was the 7th (extra) product and is not even included in the little magazine list that came with the box so I am not sure if this was even intended to be in the box!

Imedeen Advanced Beauty Shot Collagen and Vitamin C 2Anyways, in the name of experimental curiosity I had the shot! It is ready to drink as is and you are supposed to have only one a day. It is produced by Pfizer, one of the biggest chemistry companies in the world, so you can feel safe drinking it. (you can click on the picture to see it larger and be able to read the ingredients etc)

The liquid is orange-yellow and it smells a little medicinal. It tastes quite sweet like a concentrated orange juice. It was definitely a lot more pleasant that I expected. It was a pleasant surprise and a nice addition to the box but as there is no solid scientific evidence that these drinks help the skin I won’t be purchasing this. SCORE = 6/10

Regenerate Enamel Science Advanced Toothpaste

Regenerate Enamel Science Advanced ToothpasteThis toothpaste arrived sealed which is lovely. It is supposed to be an advanced toothpaste that repairs your tooth’s enamel to an extent by reversing the erosion process. Like any other toothpaste it smells fresh and feels like a typical toothpaste.

I can’t say that I noticed any “repair” but this is the sort of thing that even if it works it is done on a molecular level so you wouldn’t always notice. You might get an improvement in the “cold” or “warm” feeling on your teeth. The packaging is a standard tube and the branding is very clear.

There isn’t much writing on it at the front, it has a fair amount of white space which makes it look quite clinical. But I guess that is what you want and expect from a toothpaste. It looks the part for sure. I love that the box contained a different type of product like the toothpaste and the beauty shot above. SCORE = 7/10.

Revers Cosmetics Hot Makeup Bronzing Compact Powder

Revers Cosmetics Hot Makeup Bronzing Compact PowderWho doesn’t need a bronzer especially in the summer months. This product was very welcome.

The packaging is very cheap looking and the product definitely doesn’t give you a luxury feeling. This is the type of bronzer I would get when I was a teenager. Even the branding at the top of the plastic lid “Hot makeup 100% happiness” and the two dogs, it just looks like this products is going for a certain age demographic.

Nevertheless, if a product is of a good quality that trumps for me over any packaging or branding looks. Unfortunately thought the quality of the bronzer was not great either. It did last all day however, the colour was very “dirty” looking rather than “sunkissed” type which is what you would expect from a bronzer. That is the effect that a bronzer is supposed to add after all, a tanned type of brown.

The colour does not come out as dark as it looks which is ok it happens with a lot of bronzers, goes to show you that you should always try a product out before purchasing. You can layer it though and create a darker colour so in a way it is nice that you can control the darkness.

I’m afraid the “dirty” looking brown colour just didn’t work for my skin tone so I won’t be using this further. This is the type of product that would make a teenager very happy, so I might give this away to a family member. SCORE = 5/10.

Cowshed Chamomile Refreshing Toner

Cowshed Chamomile Refreshing TonerI tried a hand cream from the Cowshed company before and while it was actually a good hand cream the Cowshed branding had me laughing for hours (see Birchbox June). A very similar trend happened here with this toner.

The product is good. It feels nice on the skin and it cleans out even thick layered make up and it doesn’t leave your skin feeling striped of oils. It cleans more than it should considering it’s just a toner and it leaves the skin feeling very natural. It smells fresh and is alcohol free containing Lavender and Chamomile. It is free from parabens and artificial colours and it looks like a clear liquid.

Cowshed Chamomile Refreshing Toner 2

I will definitely use this up and I love the small travel friendly size but again I have to say the whole “Cowshed” branding is just a fail. Why would I want to put any Cowshed stuff on my face. I have no idea what these people where thinking when they branded their company and it is a real shame because so far the products I’ve tried are not bad at all. This one doesn’t look as bad as the hand cream I tried which was called “Cowshed cow pat cream” and was in a black tube!

Perhaps the branding is meant to lower your expectations so that you then like the products? Who knows. Good toner and hand cream nevertheless but I won’t be caught with Cowshed stuff in my bag. SCORE = 7/10.

Overall, I liked the variety of products in this box, the fact that there were 7 products (one more than usual) and that the theme of the box actually matched the products which believe it or not doesn’t happen that often. Unfortunately, though once again Look Fantastic didn’t really include very high quality products and it is starting to feel like a cheap box month after month.

Initial box score, in terms of products and first feelings = 7/10

Overall box score after product testing (a sum of product scores) =6.3/10

Star product = Morrocanoil Hydrating Hair Styling Cream
