Cohorted Beauty Box October 2017 – Unboxing and Product Reviews

One more month has come to an end but worry not as this means it is time for one more Cohorted unboxing!

October’s Cohorted beauty box was the standard black Cohorted branded box that closes magnetically and is held with a black ribbon bow. As always, it came with a small beauty magazine (only 31 pages) that tells you a little bit more about each product and some featured products or artists.

As I mentioned previously, unlike other beauty boxes, Cohorted doesn’t really follow a monthly theme, but you can sort of guess a theme from the editorial intro, which appears to be “Autumn beauty trends”.

This month’s Cohorted box contained 5 unique products, from left to right: an eye shadow palette, a hair oil, a lip gloss, a skin serum and a brow tamer.

Let’s dive in a little more deeply into how each product performed after a week’s use. Bear in mind that these are my personal opinions and as beauty is a very personal thing, we all have different skin, beauty requirements and biological build which can influence things. What worked for me might not work for you and vice versa. If you tried any of these please leave your comments below!

Doucce Freematic Eyeshadow Pro Palette

I can’t believe this is the second month in a row that Cohorted included a full size eye shadow palette from a reputable brand. I thought that since we got one last month, it would be a few months or maybe even a year before we see one again. Such a nice surprise!

This Doucce palette is as big as big as your hand. It is made of sturdy plastic and feels heavier than you’d expect a palette of this size to be. That’s a good thing though as it gives it an expensive feeling.

It contains a mirror inside and 12 eye shadow colours. The shadows are fairly natural, so you could easily use this for a professional work look or even a natural make up look. The colours are gorgeous, acceptably pigmented (the swatches are made from going over the colour 3-4 times), but not as pigmented as let’s say the Urban Decay shadows. All of them blended easily and lasted all day. There was no creasing, colour fading or patchiness at all but bear in mind I wore the Urban Decay Original eye shadow primer underneath.

I have to say I really like the colours, especially the browns and oranges but I did feel that this palette has too many similar colours and therefore the amount of unique looks you will get out of it are limited.

However, the eye shadow pans are held in the palette magnetically, so you could easily pop some of them out and replace them with colours of your choice. Or alternatively, if you use a specific colour too much you can simply replenish that one and keep using the palette without having to throw it away. I really love the magnetic functionality, it opens up so many different functions, even if for example, you wanted to go away on a holiday and take 2 Doucee colours and 2 from another brand.

This palette retails for £50 and it is admittedly a little on the pricey side. SCORE = 7/10

The Innate Life Rose Hair Elixir

The Innate Life Rose Hair Elixir_20171029204828802This is a hair elixir that is meant to moisturise, repair and strengthen your hair. You can use this on both dry and wet hair especially before blow drying as a heat protection oil. Alternatively, this can also be used to repair damaged hair, nourish split ends and even tame frizzy hair.

It of course feels oily and will “weigh down” you hair in the same way as any hair styling or oil product would so use it in small amounts. Personally, I would avoid placing it on the scalp and focus on applying it from the mid-ends of the hair. However, you can use it for deep scalp conditioning if you wish.

It smells quite pleasant and has a strong floral scent. The bottle is glass and comes with a little dropper that even has a measuring guideline.

It contains 15 plants oils and is actually recommended to for daily use for best results. It was definitely an interesting product to try and especially useful for styling away those frizzy, unruly hairs.

This oil retails for £12 for 10mL and while this might sound expensive, it will last you a while as you only really need a couple of drops a day. SCORE = 8/10

Clarins Gloss Prodige

This Clarins lip gloss came in the colour Gloss Prodige Crystal 12 which is essentially clear.

It is a little sticky and doesn’t actually dry but that is expected and normal behaviour for any lip gloss. It comes in a plastic, square tube with a glass lid that carries the Clarins logo on it.

The product design looks very simple and not particularly special but I actually like that. It is a gloss not a lipstick and it shouldn’t take away the shine from another product. There is also something quite elegant about its simplicity.

It works perfectly on top of other lipsticks to give them that little extra shininess but also works well on its own.

Personally, I mainly use this on top of red lipsticks to give them that extra sexiness and transform them to a fancier look. However, you can use this on top of any colour you like but bear in mind that some of the colour will transfer and your gloss will not be clear anymore. Either use a clean brush every time or keep using it over the same type of colour.

This gloss has a sweet cosmetic smell and retails for £16, which is an expected price for a brand like Clarins. SCORE = 8/10

Lancôme Advanced Genifique

Personally, I love Lancôme skin care. It often smells nice and nourishes the skin well so I was very happy to see a Lancôme skin serum in this month’s Cohorted box. However, this product was also the disappointment of this month’s Cohorted, not because of the product, but because of the size.

Cohorted included two 5mL tube samples of this youth activating serum which is highly disappointing as these are free samples that you can easily get from Lancôme. If I got these in any other beauty box I’d be happy, but one of Cohorted’s selling points is that they include full size or at worst travel size products, so free sample size items are a huge let down. These tubes even say at the back that they are free samples not for sale.

It is really unfortunate because I’d love this serum on a bigger size. It is colourless, smells faintly cosmetic and gets absorbed by the skin very quickly. It leaves the skin soft and nourished.

It contains hyaluronic acid (see my post “Hyaluronic acid – the fountain of youth”) and is suitable for any skin type, ethnicity and age. It gives the skin a younger appearance over time by boosting the skin’s radiance, clarity and texture and even helps reduce and prevent the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

I love this product it is definitely a keeper. I use this daily, both in the morning and in the night, on a clean face before my moisturiser. Make sure to moisturise after using this to enhance the hyaluronic acid and other ingredient benefits. SCORE = 9/10

Pixi by Petra Brow Tamer

I tried this already in the September Glossy box and I absolutely loved it. It is a clear gel that keeps the hairs of the eye brows together all day long, without actually feeling or looking like there is anything on them.

If you have unruly or full, thick eye brows, this is the product for you. I am blessed with thick, full eyebrows and so I rarely do anything with them other than “clean” them every time I do my make up to take the foundation off. This clear gel is perfect for that and it also keeps them tamed, so the hairs don’t move out of shape. It lasts all day and works very well.

The only downside of this is that because it is a clear liquid it will get dirty much faster than you will run out of it. As a result, you will have to throw it away way before it is empty. Here’s a picture of a new one next to one I’ve been using once a day for 3 weeks. You can see that it becomes unsanitary fairly quickly and you have to throw it away before you even reached the bottom. For this reason, I love that it is a small size, I wouldn’t want to be wasting a big tube every time.

This small size is the full size of this product and even though I would normally be annoyed by that, it really works for this one. This brow tamer retails for £12 which is a very good price for what it is. SCORE = 10/10

Cohorted October 2017 4_20171029205317594

Overall, I liked this month’s Cohorted box. The products were of high quality and good size with the exception of the two Lancôme samples. This is the second month in a row that Cohorted included a full size eye shadow palette from a reputable brand, what more can a girl want!

Initial box score, in terms of products and first feelings = 8/10

Overall box score after product testing (a sum of product scores) = 8.4/10

Star product = Pixi by Petra Brow Tamer
