Wellthos Health and Fitness Box November 2017 – Unboxing and Product Reviews

The Wellthos Health and Fitness Box is the last box for November and even though it is sad to let another month go, it is exciting to enter December and start opening all the Christmas themed boxes!

Wellthos November 2017 2_20171130014852165

The Wellthos box was the typical branded cardboard box with no special design. It came as always with the monthly little booklet that explains a little bit about each product contained but also has some recipe ideas, using products from the box, and some light workouts. Although I absolutely love the recipe feature because you get to try a recipe and a new product in one go, I haven’t tried the two contained this month. I’ve been incredibly busy with my house move but to be honest they also didn’t really inspire me.

Anyhow, let’s get into the details! November’s Wellthos box contained 10 health and fitness products of which two were not food items.

Wellthos November 2017_20171130013515059

The products contained were from left to right: a tea, cheese crisps, superfood powder, energy balls, flapjacks, turmeric latte, magnesium oil, supplements, a chickpea snack and fruit whey powder.

PS. You can click on the smaller images to see them larger if you want to read out ingredients, nutritional information etc.

Bear in mind that these are my personal opinions and health, fitness and taste can be very personal things as we all have different taste and biological builds. What worked for me might not work for you and vice versa. If you tried any of these products please leave your comments below!

Mahtay Yerba Mate Infused Tea

This is a sparkling tea infused with coconut water and acai berries. It is meant to help revitalise, rejuvenate and focus while only containing 45kcals.

Mahtay Yerba Mate Infused Tea_20171130014111666

The bottle looks smaller than normal and it is indeed as it contains 300mL instead of the standard 330mL. It is fairly sturdy and of good quality though and the blue colour makes it very attractive. It is a product I would definitely notice on a shelf somewhere but I would immediately think it is water, no tea. The dark blue doesn’t give it a tea look or feeling it does give a refreshing sense.

Mahtay Yerba Mate Infused Tea 2_20171130014159905

It is a fizzy (carbonated) drink and it smells like tea. Personally, it really didn’t do it for me the tea vs fizziness and the coconut water which I don’t like, really didn’t work for me but it is personal taste. Tea with fizziness though is a little strange either way.

It contains caffeine to perk you up and only 10.8 of carbohydrates of which all are sugars. For 45kcals it’s definitely not the worst choice of drink you can make. This bottle retails for £1.99, or cheaper if you buy many of them, which is a little on the expensive side. This is the type of product that is very dependent on personal taste and unfortunately, it didn’t work for me. SCORE = 7/10

Well and Truly Cheese Sticks

This is meant to be a small healthy snack for in-between meals but of course you could have it whenever you like. It contains 40% less fat than the average cheese crisps, is gluten, GM and nut free and also vegetarian.

Well and Truly Cheese Sticks_20171130013634422

This small 23g bag contains 93kcals, 3.5g of fat, 15.6g of carbs, 2.1g of protein, 0.5g of fibre and 0.6g of salt. It is essentially a carbohydrate snack to give you a little energy to keep going between meals but it won’t keep you full for long as it is small and low in protein.

The bag is of standard crisp bag quality and it looks like a healthy cheese snack. The branding and design is spot on and it gives a healthy feeling to the consumer.

Well and Truly Cheese Sticks 3_20171130013659989

It contains, literally a handful, a small handful to be accurate, of crisps that are in a spiral, elongated shape. It has the common “crisp cheese” type of smell not the “natural-fresh cheese” smell but it is nevertheless pleasant if you like cheese. The cheese taste is even stronger than the smell and the crisps are nicely crispy but not too dry either.

It is a very addicting and delicious snack and I could have easily eaten a few bags! Just make sure to stick to one bag! These cheese sticks definitely have 100% the taste even though they have less fat, I’d never guess that.

You can buy these from Tescos for £1.50 on offer or £2.00 normally. Admittedly, for the amount of food inside this small bag, the price tag is high but after you taste them and while remembering they can be a healthy snack, you won’t mind the price anymore. SCORE = 9/10

Green Goodness Wellness

This is a superfood blend powder containing raw organic cacao powder, organic lucuma, raw organic banana powder and organic maca. It is vegan, gluten free and of course 100% organic. You can use this powder in so many ways, mixing it in a shake, over yogurt or other breakfast, over desserts or food etc. The sky is the limit and it is up to you and your taste really.

Green Goodness Wellness_20171130014326778

The small bag feels and looks like a tiny envelope but I’m assuming that is because this is a sample. It contains 10g of powder and it is suggested to use 5-15g per day. It can help reduce tiredness and fatigue while boosting the mood.

It contains a lot of goodies, typically in 10g:

31.5kcal, 1.052g protein, 0.25g fat, 5.25g carbs of which 3.16g are sugars, 1.99g of fibre, 0.013g of sodium, 0.00815mg thiamine B1, 0.02925mg riboflavin B2, 0.0045mg vitamin B6, 0.0036mg vitamin A, 0.07mg vitamin B3, 47.38mg calcium, 1.053mg iron, 14.6mg magnesium, 37.28mg potassium, 0.1mg copper and 0.0316mg manganese.

Green Goodness Wellness 2_20171130014355266

Great stuff for sure and a very versatile powder that you could add it anything you like. It is very convenient to have such products around that give you similar benefits to fruit without going off as quickly as fruit but for me personally, nothing really beats fresh. SCORE = 8/10

Kitchen and Soul Energy Balls

This is a treat or even an in-between meals, energy snack. It contains 100% natural ingredients, is hand rolled and  has no gluten, no dairy, no wheat or refined sugar.

Kitchen and Soul Energy Balls_20171130014226978

It contains coconut, cashew, orange and cardamom and it tastes very pleasant. It doesn’t have any “synthetic” type of taste at all and it is nicely moist while still being relatively dry enough to hold in a ball. If I could only use one word to describe the taste it would be “zingy”!

For a 30g ball there are 127kcals, 7.2g of fat, 12.3g of carbs of which 10.9 are sugars and 2.1g of protein. Remember that is only one ball and this bag contained two so it might even be a good idea to keep the second one for later, otherwise double the kcals and stats!

Kitchen and Soul Energy Balls 2_20171130014255541

It is an energy/carbohydrate snack for sure and as the protein content is fairly low, it might not keep you full for long.

The outter package is just a plastic bag with minimal branding and design which gives the product a slightly not too appealing look. However, after you try them out you will probably like them. I personally don’t like coconut and I actually liked these! SCORE = 8/10

Sweet Deceits Almond Butter Flapjacks

This is a super easy desert/snack to make. The box comes with a tray and two bags, one containing all the dry ingredients and one containing all the liquids. All you need to do is mix the two bags together, spread the mix in the provided tray and bake for 20 mins.

Sweet Deceits Almond Butter Flapjacks_20171130013914579

On top of that, you end up with one of the nicest flapjacks you will ever try. So easy and yet so healthy and tasty. I am not usually a flapjack fan as I don’t like dry food too much but these were really nice and easy to eat.

They taste sweet but not in a sickly way, in a satisfying way for sure and the strongest taste that comes across is the sweetness from the apple. I didn’t really noticed the almond butter at all or the coconut oil and blossom nectar!

This product won the Great taste award of 2017 and it is definitely worthy of that. I absolutely love that everything you need is included, even the baking tray, and I even don’t mind the simple cardboard box and very green design. It looks like a healthy product and you would have never guessed from tasting it that it contains (per 35g of serving) only 166kcals, 8.6g of fat, 17.6g of carbs of which 6.5g are sugars, 1.8g of fibre and 3.6g of protein. Sure it is high in kcals for a snack but sometimes you need that little energy input and of course it is actually low in kcals for a dessert!

These flapjacks have no refined sugar, are gluten free, dairy free, vegan, non GMO, a source of fiber and contain all natural ingredients.

You can buy this box from Holland & Barrett for £6.99 which is an acceptable price. Neither too expensive or too cheap. Make them for you friends and see if they would ever guess that they are so healthy! SCORE = 9/10

Turmerlicious Instant Hot Drink Vanilla

I’m going be honest, this is not my type of hot drink. To me, it smells like food or a curry and it just feels strange that it is a drink. On top of that it is made of 67% coconut milk powder which is again not my favourite.

Turmerlicious Instant Hot Drink Vanilla_20171130013744521

However, if you are into these type of tastes give this drink a try. It is very easy to make and very quick and it can be an alternative to coffee or tea. All you need to do is add the yellow powder to a cup, make a paste with a small amount of cold milk and then fill it up with hot water. All the powder instantly dissolves and it becomes a creamy looking drink.

This drink also exists in other flavours: ginger, choco and chilli choc which sound interesting for sure. Not sure how the turmeric smell would work with those either though. It is essentially a turmeric latte which would cost you, excluding the milk, 118kcal, 9g of fat, 8g of carbs of which 4g are sugars and 2g of protein.

Even though it is just a small satchel, it looks nice and is designed well too. It instantly reminded me of Cadbury hot chocolate which made me want to drink this. Unfortunately, the strong turmeric smell wasn’t enough to convince me though. SCORE = 5/10

Better You Recovery Oil

This is an after exercise type of oil to help soothe and relax aching muscles. It contains magnesium, camphor, black pepper and lemon oils supporting natural recovery, releasing muscle tension and aiding skeletal strength.

Better You Recovery Oil_20171130014422987

Magnesium is definitely your best friend in muscle aching situations so this is good idea of a product. You are meant to spray this on to the body and massage into clean wet or dry skin. You could also eat a banana for magnesium!

This product definitely helps but I am not sure I could say it is better than other muscle recovery products that even contain amino acids and other helpful compounds.

It smells like lemon with oils which makes sense given the ingredients and the bottle has a spray applicator which makes it very easy to use.  It is a product that is very useful if you train hard, especially if you want to decrease recovery.

My go to this type of product is the LA muscle workout recovery gel which not only smells lovely (menthol but mostly cinnamon), feels nice and looks nice (it’s blue which adds a calming psychological effect) but also reduces muscle pain much more significantly for me.

Nevertheless, this is a great fitness product that you should try out if you exercise a lot of suffer from muscle aching. SCORE = 8/10

 Biomed Energysmart CoQ10 100mg with Vitamin B12 100mcg and BioPerine 5mg

I love that Wellthos included supplements. If you are into fitness at all there is a high chance you are taking some kind of supplement, even if it is just simple, standard vitamins.

These supplements are meant to contribute to normal energy and metabolism while reducing tiredness and fatigue. They are excellent for those who are on the go constantly and they are GMO, free from sugar, wheat, gluten, corn, milk, egg, fish and preservatives.

They are normal sized pills with a yellow/orange powder inside. They do not smell of anything and do not taste of much (although, don’t chew them).

If you want my personal opinion, while it might sound a little harsh, if you need more energy, exercise, eat healthier and drink lots of water. There are many supplements out there to take and I do myself also, but these would not be in my top 5. Of course, if you do have a healthy lifestyle but still struggling with tiredness first talk to your doctor and then perhaps try these out. SCORE = 7/10

Spiced Nutrition Roasted Chickpeas

These spiced chickpeas are almost perfectly balanced. They are whole, neither dry or moist, chickpeas that are evenly spiced. They have a nice spicy kick to them, but not too much, which gives them flavour and interest.

Spiced Nutrition Roasted Chickpeas_20171130014024125

This is a high protein snack as it is mainly chickpeas, containing 17g of protein per pack (which is 75g), 341kcals, 6.7g of fat, 44.5g of carbs and 9.4g of fibre. It’s a fair amount of protein for a snack but also a fair amount of kcalories so, don’t eat the entire bag in once go!

Spiced Nutrition Roasted Chickpeas 2_20171130014048995

The packaging is just a standard plastic bag but it is resealable which is great. The branding and design is a little on the ugly side and slightly confusing. There is a mountain at the front with a person holding their hands up in the air and it says “young and brave”. No idea what this has to do with this snack or chickpeas!

Anyhow, this snack is vegan, 100% natural and gluten free. SCORE = 7/10

The Fruit Whey Protein

This is an envelope type satchel, clearly a one-use sample and therefore the branding and design are fairly simple. It is a why protein from cow’s milk (49.4) but also contains strawberries (49.4%), powder I assume, and natural stevia (1.2%).

You can add it to a desert as a protein powder or make it as a shake with water or milk. You can even add it to fruit smoothies too!

The Fruit Whey Protein_20171130013851836

I have to admit, a fruit protein powder sounds very appealing to me as most of the whey powders out there have very specific and limited tastes and are mostly also synthetic tasting.

The powder has a lovely red, strawberry colour and faint smell and it contains 200kcals, 25.6g of protein, 3.4g of fat, 16g carbohydrates of which 15.8 are sugars and 4.6g of fibre. Not bad stats at all, a little high on the sugar and carbs but it is expected as it is almost 50% strawberries.

I tried this powder in both milk and water and it was struggling to dissolve in both. It looked awesome though as it dyed the water and milk in a strong strawberry colour. The milk one was absolutely gorgeous, it tasted exactly like a strawberry shake and the water one was lovely too, just thinner and more like a flavoured water type of drink.

I am definitely sold on this one and it doesn’t happen often. A lot of protein powders taste too synthetic, even for a chemist like me, and this one is a refreshing, both literally and figuratively, protein powder.

If you are on a loosing fat diet or wanting to loose weight, you might want to consider other protein powders that are much lower in carbohydrates and sugar and perhaps have these 1-2 times a week. On the other hand, if you train hard and burn a lot of energy this fruit powder might be perfect for you. I personally love it! SCORE = 9/10

This month’s Wellthos box was a nice balance between consumable food items and other health and fitness items. I definitely found some products in here that I will keep purchasing and some that I’d never reach for again but that is exactly the purpose of these type of boxes. Discovery, experimentation and some health and fitness motivation.

Initial box score, in terms of products and first feelings = 8/10

Overall box score after product testing (a sum of product scores) = 7.7/10

Star product = Three products scored a 9 this month, absolutely amazing. The Well and Truly Cheese Sticks, Sweet Deceits Almond Butter Flapjacks and The Fruit Whey Protein. Picking between them is almost impossible as they are for completely different purposes but if I had to, just had to pick one…ok I honestly can’t, they are all brilliant.

Did you get this month’s Wellthos? What did your box contain? What did you think of the products? Have you tried any of the products listed? Let me know your experiences! For a general  review on Health and Fitness Boxes click here otherwise for a general review on Wellthos click here.
