Skin Kissed Vitamin C Serum – In Depth Review and Ingredient Analysis

Serums are a very important part of skincare. They can bring a lot of nourishing ingredients to the skin that might not be easily formulated in a moisturiser. The right serum with the right ingredients can make a huge difference to your skin’s texture and appearance as well as your skin’s health on a molecular level.

A serum is meant to be used on a clean face, before a moisturiser and in my opinion, your moisturiser or serum should include at least two hero compounds: vitamin C and hyaluronic acid. Click on the links to find out all the information on what they do, what scientific evidence there is behind these compounds and most importantly, if they work in skincare.

In summary, vitamin C is a hero compound as it is a potent anti-oxidant, it can increase collagen production keeping the skin healthy and younger looking, reduce melanin production giving a brighter skin appearance and can even repair the effects of UV-exposure.

Hyaluronic acid on the other hand, is known in the science community as the fountain of youth compound. It can hold up to 1000 times its weight in water, so it is a king moisturiser. It helps wounds heal faster (often added on bandages) and increases collagen production leading to younger looking skin.

For now let’s get into the details. Does this serum work and is it worth your cash?

Here’s my chemist’s verdict:

Colour and Texture

The serum is colourless with a very pale yellow tint. The colour is natural and I love that there isn’t any added colouring. However, over time as the product oxidses it picks up a much stronger yellow-orange colour. If this happens to your serum it is time to replace it!

It has a texture thicker than water but lighter than oil. It spreads very easily on the skin but at the same time it’s not thin enough to run all over your hands while you apply it on your face. The texture is spot on.

The serum has a very faint floral type of scent which is likely coming from the added Rose water and Phenoxyethanol. That’s a good thing though as this compound contains collagen from fish which can sometimes smell quite bad.

This serum smells nice though and it is fairly subtle. You might not even smell it at all unless you put your nose pretty close to the bottle.

This 20mL bottle retails for £24.95. To buy yours click here.

Bear in mind that generally speaking it takes 1-2 months in order to see real results from skin care, so you will likely need to go through 2 bottles before you can seriously evaluate whether this serum works for you.

The serum comes in a black glass bottle with a gold, metal covered plastic dropper. It looks simple but elegant and I love the black with gold colour combination.

It definitely stands out, as serums don’t often have as much of a dark colour appearance, and it looks good.

The dropper also makes it very easy to use and is appropriate for a serum of it’s texture.

Practicality of use – user experience

As mentioned above, this serum is very easy to use. The dropper makes is very user friendly, not just in terms of picking the serum out of the bottle but also it controlling how much product to use. There is no recommended amount of usage so use as much or as little as you think your skin needs. It will be obvious after you put it on.

The texture is very pleasurable on the skin and practical, as it is not too watery and doesn’t run down your face or skin as fast as some other serums.

Overall, there was nothing negative about this serum.

Skin compatibility

This serum is compatible for all skin types.

The ingredient list is very short and so there are only 3 ingredients that could potentially cause you irritation, see list at the ingredient section. However, this serum has a low irritation potential as far as cosmetic products are concerned.

If you are worried try a little at the back of your hand first or consult with a medical doctor.

This serum left my skin feeling thicker, more moisturised and healthier and the feeling lasted for the day. I even put it down the neck and it felt really nice. I didn’t notice any line or pore reduction but I only used the serum for a few days. Remember that skin care is a long term plan!

The ingredients are great and have very high potential, this is definitely a serum worth using for 1-2 months in order to evaluate if it works for you.

Skin Kissed Vitamin C Serum 9

This serum contains only 7 ingredients and I personally love that. The formulation is simple and to the point and it satisfies the chemist in me.

Overall, there aren’t any ingredient negatives and this serum contains some hero compounds that are a must have in your skincare routine, even if you are not a skincare or makeup junkie.

As much as I love that there is added collagen too, note that unfortunately there is very little scientific evidence on added collagen in skincare being beneficial for the skin, simply because most collagen forms cannot penetrate the skin (molecule is too big). Nevertheless, this ingredient can still protect and treat the surface level of the skin but it will not boost your skin’s collagen production. The added vitamin C and hyaluronic acid though will!

Ingredient positives:

  1. Aqua (water) based formulation.
  2. Rosa Damascene (Rose Water) – A fragrance, skin conditioner and skin protector. Also a tonic and soothing compound.
  3. Vitamin C (Ascorbic Acid) – This is the natural form of vitamin C, a hero anti-oxidant molecule that can sooth the skin (although it can irritate some) and improve the appearance of the signs of ageing. It can brighten the skin and reduce hyperpigmentation and age spots. It can boost the immune system, help and protect cells and aid in the skin’s collagen production. Science supports the wonders of applying vitamin C to the skin and therefore is a must have in your skincare. For more information check out: Vitamins C & E – Do they work in skin care?
  4. Glycerine – Found naturally in the skin so can be seen as a skin replenishing ingredient. A skin conditioner that helps improve and smooth the appearance of skin. A good moisturiser that is almost always present in skincare products.
  5. Hyaluronic Acid – Known in the science community as the fountain of youth compound. Can hold up to 1000 times its weight in water, so it is a king moisturiser. Helps wounds heal faster and increases collagen production leading to younger looking skin. For more info and all the scientifically proven claims see “Hyaluronic acid – the fountain of youth?”
  6. Marine Collagen (Fish) – A natural humectant (=locks in water) and moisturiser. It does not penetrate the skin and therefore, will not boost your skin’s collagen supply or underlying structure but it can protect and treat the surface level of the skin.

Ingredient negatives:

Ingredients that can cause irritation to some:

This is actually really case specific, as different people have different sensitivities and allergies. Just because a compound has been reported by some to cause sensitivity, it doesn’t mean you will have an issue. “Sensitizer” compounds being present is not a negative in my opinion, as this is the case with pretty much everything out there and funnily enough I’ve seen products that are targeted specifically for sensitive skin, containing some compounds that have been reported by some, or are known to be, sensitizers.

If you have sensitive skin or you are prone to skin sensitisation and unwanted reactions, try a little bit of this at the back of your hand first and consult a medical doctor if you are concerned.

Check out: What is sensitive skin? What are the causes and what can we do?

The following compounds present in this serum have been either proven or claimed by some to be sensitizers, irritants, allergens etc: Rosa Damascene (Rose Water), Vitamin C (Ascorbic Acid), Phenoxyethanol.

This serum is very simple ingredient wise but yet can be very beneficial for the skin. The added hero must have compounds of vitamin C and hyaluronic acid definitely make this serum worth using. The fact that it also contains Glycerine and Collagen is an added bonus.

This serum made my skin feel thicker, more moisturised and healthier even after the first use. It has the ingredients and potential to be a valuable item in your skincare routine. I recommend this serum.
