This month’s Look Fantastic box was absolutely gorgeous. Both in actual box design and products contained.
It came in a blue and white box with a nice, cloud-like, pattern at the front. The box is as always very sturdy and of high quality, making the Look Fantastic boxes, in general, the most beautiful beauty boxes in the UK at least. I already have quite a few around my house for storage and decoration purposes.
The theme for this month was “Into the Blue” which is very evident and fitting given the box design. As Look Fantastic stated “June is all about springing into the Summer season, with a focus on hydration, luminosity and products that leave you feeling all-round rejuvenated.” Well, the theme definitely fits the month and is very welcome!
This beauty box always comes with a quote under the lid and this month it said: “Individually, we are one drop. Together, we are an ocean.” If every person in the world was a drop you couldn’t make an ocean but beyond this scientific detail, I love this quote. Not sure what it has to do with this box though but hey.
The Look Fantastic box also always comes with a small monthly Beauty Magazine that has a little more information about the products contained and some other featured products, and a travel size, but full edition, of the ELLE magazine. This beauty box is such an amazing value for money. To subscribe to Look Fantastic and get £5 off your first box click here.
This month’s box contained 7 products (1 extra than usual). From left to right as seen in the picture below, the products were: a hair mask, a day moisturiser, a face mask, an eye shadow, a face cleanser, a body cream and a body and face tanning lotion.
Let’s have a look at the products in more detail. These are short reviews that cover first impressions and experiences from using the products. For full reviews, including ingredient analysis and if I would recommend a product or not, check out: Bonds of Beauty (all articles here). Bear in mind that these are my personal opinions and that beauty is a very personal thing, we all have different skin, requirements and biological build which can influence things. Christopher Robin Cleansing Volumising Hair Paste
I’ve tried this hair mask before from the Look Fantastic September 2017 box. If you are a long-term user then you might think that it’s not great that Look Fantastic (like all beauty boxes) repeat some products but at least this one was good, so I will use it again happily.
This is a French hair mask, that you are meant to use after your shampoo or conditioner, on wet hair. Thankfully, unlike a lot of other hair masks, you don’t need to wait around the shower for 5-10 mins, this can be used as a massage and rinse one! That’s a major plus in my eyes as I hate waiting around in the shower. However, if you don’t mind, you can leave it on for 10-15 minutes.
The packaging is just a plastic, small tub but it feels quite sturdy. The branding is very simple and presentation wise it doesn’t look particularly attractive. I’m not sure if the product looks like a hair mask but it doesn’t look like anything else specific either.
The actual product is a brown paste that looks very unattractive. However, if you get past that and you pick it up or smell it you will be greeted with a very pleasant, sweet cosmetic scent, a bit like a floral cream.
The most amazing thing about this hair mask though is the transformation of the formulation. This poo looking brown paste almost instantly transforms into the most gorgeous silky, smooth, white foam when you work it in your hair. It feels amazing, smells nice and your hair feels great.
It definitely gave my hair volume even though my hair is fairly thick and unruly. What is even better though is that the volume was fairly natural looking and not crazy puffy. This product worked for me, so if you struggle with volume you might want to give this one a go.
It is paraben, silicone, SLS and colorant free and is suitable for coloured hair too. SCORE = 9/10.
Real Chemistry Enviromental Rescue Essential Day Cream
This was a bonus item that wasn’t even mentioned in the Look Fantastic monthly beauty magazine. Bonus items are always welcome, even if they are just sample sizes. That’s the place where we don’t mind sample sizes right?
This day cream, which doesn’t contain SPF but contains some “pollution controlling molecules”, came in a cute cloud-shaped satchel and contains enough for approximately 1-3 uses.
The cream smells like a typical moisturiser, in a pleasant way (reminds me of Nivea a bit) and has a white medium thickness consistency. It spreads easily and gets absorbed by the skin fast (although not all ingredients will get absorbed some stay on the skin). It feels nice but I haven’t noticed any luminous glow.
Despite the fact that I am a Chemist and I love anything Chemistry or Science, I actually didn’t like the branding of this company and product. Cosmetics are real chemistry, like with many things in life, including your body which is and does real chemistry, and it almost seems like the brand is indirectly implying that their products are real chemistry and not others. This is of course just my interpretation of the name, I don’t know for sure what the brand is going for, but I just found it a bit cheeky and unnecessary.
Nevertheless, I enjoyed using this cream and it contains a few good ingredients. SCORE = 7/10
Mádara SOS Hydra Moisture + Radiance Mask
Who doesn’t love a nice face mask? They can truly make you feel relaxed and rejuvenated, and some even have some skin nourishing ingredients in them!
This pink cream face mask definitely has quite a few skin nourishing ingredients and it feels really nice on the skin. You are meant to put it on dry, cleansed skin and leave for 15 minutes or alternatively, just leave on indefinitely. If you have oily skin I recommend you wipe it off after 15 minutes with a damp cloth, as it otherwise leaves an oily layer on your skin that is never fully absorbed and will just add to your oils. If on the other hand you have dry skin, you can try to leave it on indefinitely if you wish.
The mask smells really nice, almost like a typical cosmetic cream, and it comes in a cute, light pink tube. It’s not the prettiest but not the ugliest either.
It lasts 6M, is vegan and contains some natural and organic certified ingredients (bear in mind that organic or natural igredients make no difference in skin care and this is just a marketing/trend/money making label that many companies use). It is free from parabens, petrochemicals, synthetic fragrances (still contains fragrances) and colours (still contains colour). It is suitable for all skin types.
Even though this is a small travel size, 12.5mL tube it came with it’s outer packaging and a seal which is great.
My skin definitely felt hydrated afterwards but because I have oily skin I had to rinse it off as it left me with an oily layer. Nevertheless, it felt nice and the ingredients contained can provide your skin with some nourishment. SCORE = 9/10
Studio 10 Liquid Foil I-Radiance
I first thought that this was a lip gloss or lip stick but it turns out it is a metallic eye shadow!
The packaging is plastic and feels cheap, mainly due to the friction and squeakiness when you unscrew the wand. The branding is also minimal and the product is very plain which actually is not necessarily a bad thing, IF the product comes with its outer packaging which would give you all the information you might be looking for. This one came on its own and therefore, the minimal information makes the product feel a little out of the blue. What is this, what does it contain, what does it do etc?
At least the Look Fantastic beauty magazine gives a little info. This is a long lasting crease resistant eye shadow.
There is no denying that this metallic golden shadow looks gorgeous but it felt a little more heavy than normal eye shadows when it was on the eye lid, but it is expected to a certain extent, given it’s consistency and the fact that it is the metallic type. Even though I was almost convinced it would crease it didn’t but bear in mind that I always use an eye shadow primer.
This metallic gold liquid eye shadow can be used even for body art or even highlighting if you are brave! It dries out and doesn’t smudge and could be the perfect lighting-halo effect on your eye shadow looks. SCORE = 8/10
Elemis Superfood Facial Wash
Elemis is a brand that is coming more and more into the spot light and I’m always up for trying their products.
Look Fantastic has included an Elemis product before but this time it was their superfood facial wash. I have been on the lookout for a good wet facial wash and this is perfect! Got to love it when you get a product in a beauty box that fits what you were looking for!
It is said to be a smoothie of superfoods including wheatgrass, kale, nettle and pre-biotics. It definitely contains a lot of amazing ingredients which would normally be nourishing to the skin BUT it is debatable whether this facial wash is actually nourishing or if the extend that it is, is worth it, as you will simply wash most of them away. Skin nourishing ingredients are obviously a lot more important in leave-on products than facial washes and this product might be a little more fancy sounding that it actually is.
Nevertheless, this face wash works very well. It cleansed away makeup nicely, although I had to go over twice to get a good wash (that’s true for most cleansers so it’s not a drawback) and it left my skin clean but not dry.
The actual product is a lightly yellow-greenish coloured transparent gel which has a lemongrass-like smell. It spreads really easily on the skin and the entire experience is great. I loved this one I just wish it didn’t contain fragrance and some other potential irritants.
This product lasts for 6M. SCORE = 9/10
Rituals The Ritual of Dao Body Cream
This body cream falls under the “I want to bathe in it” category. Gosh it just smells so good, it’s a combination of cosmetic cream meets baby powder. Such a sweet but moisturising and feminine type of scent! I love it even though I shouldn’t like fragranced products as they can potentially irritate your skin. This product is an excellent example of why fragranced products sell. I wanted to use this cream all the time without even looking at the ingredients!
The packaging is a standard quality tube with the typical Rituals branding. It doesn’t look especially beautiful but I think it fits the product and the brand nicely and the green colour is memorable.
Other than the gorgeous smell, this white cream of medium thickness spreads easily and is absorbed by the skin fast. It leaves a slightly oily residue behind and although the skin feels hydrated, the feeling is somewhere between the “for now hydrated” and “deeply hydrated”.
Nevertheless, the ingredients contained are good. Some of them are: Shea butter, sunflower oil, vitamin E, Ma-Yuen seed extract, Nelumbo Nucifera flower extract, cocoa seed butter, Olus vegetable oil, sunflower oil and other goodies. I wish it contained vitamin C, hyaluronic acid and some other skincare musts, that most body creams are missing (why are body products so primitive in comparison to face products, our body is skin that needs nourishing too!), but this is still pretty good compared to the other body creams out there at the moment.
This product lasts for 12M. SCORE = 9/10
Vita Liberata Fabulous Self Tanning Tinted Lotion
I’ve literally just came back from a holiday this week and so since I already have a tan I didn’t see the point in trying out this product, which is a shame as cosmetic tanning (if you use the right products) damages the skin much less than sun tanning.
This product is meant to moisturise as well as give you a tan. It contains some organic (70%) and natural extracts (bear in mind that organic or natural igredients make no difference in skin care and this is just a marketing/trend/money making label that many companies use) and is meant to give you an odour free tan.
The tube it comes in is of standard quality and it initially has a seal which is great. It looks very mainstream and doesn’t particularly stand out which is a shame as the ingredients contained show a different picture. There are definitely some skin goodies in there including hyaluronic acid. How many self-tanning products have hyaluronic acid in them?
Definitely a product I would have at the top of my list if I wanted to self-tan but since I didn’t use it I cannot score it. Is it any good? Let me know!
Overall, I loved the design of the box and I will definitely keep it around for long. I also thought that the products contained were excellent choices to try and I actually wasn’t disappointed at all that this was a skin care heavy box. The last couple of months have been going well for Look Fantastic which definitely has show improvement compared to their 2017 boxes. I am now looking forward to the Look Fantastic boxes!
Initial box score, in terms of products and first feelings = 10/10
Overall box score after product testing (a sum of product scores) = 8.5/10
Star product = Elemis Superfood Facial Wash
