Beauty Product Discovery – Glossybox Beauty Box June 2018 – Unboxing and Product Reviews

After a gorgeous unique box last month, the Glossybox June 2018 is back to it’s iconic pink box. I think many of us have come to love and appreciate the look of the standard Glossybox, so even though it’s not as gorgeous every month as the Look Fantastic boxes for example, it is still not the ugliest beauty box around.

This month’s theme was “French beauty essentials…that will make you feel at home among the golden beaches, yachts and designer fashion…”. It definitely suits the summer month June but, unless I am mistaken, not all products included are French or summer specific.

This month’s box contained 5 products as always, of which 3 were full size and the other 2 were travel size. The products were, as seen in the picture, from left to right: a razor,a glycolic scrub, an eye cooling gel, a contour-bronzer stick and a hair mask.

Let’s have a look at the products in more detail. These are short reviews that cover first impressions and experiences from using the products. For full reviews, including ingredient analysis and if I would recommend a product or not, check out: Bonds of Beauty (all articles here). Bear in mind that these are my personal opinions and that beauty is a very personal thing, we all have different skin, requirements and biological build which can influence things. What worked for me might not work for you and vice versa, please leave your comments below!

Wilkinson Sword Intuition f.a.b. Razor

No matter how you choose to de-hair yourself a razor is always handy. Wilkinson razors in general are pretty good and this one is not an exception.

I know it’s cheeky and there is no good reason for “male” and “female” razors, other than marketing purposes, but I still like that this razor is pink! The handle is thick and its shape is very practical and easy to grab.

This razor is meant to shave both backwards and forwards making the entire process a little bit faster, as the top blades shave up and the bottom shave down. There is also a water activated gel at the top and bottom of the razor (white stripes), before and after the blades, to help it glide.

The thought of a backwards forwards working razor was definitely scary but this razor worked well for me. I cut myself a few times but I often do anyways when I use brand new razors.

This full size razor retails for approximately £12 which is definitely expensive however, it will last you a while. If it’s worth the money or not might depend on your personal usage and how often you will need to replace it. SCORE = 10/10

Nip + Fab Glycolic Scrub Fix

I was just about to buy a salicylic acid scrub but here comes this glycolic acid with salicylic acid scrub to the rescue. I will write a science based post on these two compounds soon but for now just take my word. These two compounds are a must have in your skin care routine. How much, how often and which one to use primarily depends on your skin type. Details coming soon.

I’ve been using the glycolic and salicylic acid scrubs from Nip + Fab but the ones that come on a cotton pad, and I’ve been incredibly happy with them. However, an actual water wash product can be superior so this is definitely a product worth trying too.

All you need to do is apply this gel on clean damp skin and then rinse off with lukewarm water. Always use an SPF product afterwards if you’ve used this during the day and take care to not apply it on broken or irritated skin.

This product comes in a standard quality tube with the typical Nip + Fab branding which although is not the most beautiful it does stand out and the products look appropriate. This tube also comes with a seal and lasts for 6M.

The product has a strong lemon refreshing smell and is a white grainy cream. The grains dissolve in water and the skin is left feeling renewed and soft.

This 3% glycolic acid is meant to gently exfoliate and re-texture your skin while the salicylic acid contained is meant to cleanse pores. This is a very good percentage of the active ingredients and within the range of an effective product. I’ve also checked the product’s pH and it is 4, which is within the working range of these two compounds.

In simple terms what all of this means is that this is a legit product that works and has the right chemistry aspects. This might sound like a “doh” to you but there are so many products out there that have ingredients in them just for the sake of putting that name on the bottle and creating marketing around it, but when you look closely the percentage of that ingredient or the formulation characteristics would not support it being effective. And hence why some products work and some don’t!

This product worked well for me and the ingredients are good. The only let down is that I wish this product was fragrance free and didn’t contain some known irritants.

This is a travel size 50mL tube but the full size 75mL retails for £9.95 which is a very good price for what this product is. SCORE = 9/10

Monu Skin Eye Cool Gel

Although I’m sure there’s many of you out there, including myself, who might think “aw yes I do need an eye cooling gel” realistically when would you actually use this product? This is the type of product that I think I need but after I use it 1-2 times I tend to forget it at the back of a drawer.

Nevertheless, this product is meant to cool your under eye skin but also smooth any lines. Admittedly, it did none of that for me so even though I normally think I need this type of product, I didn’t see the point of this one.

This transparent but pale yellow gel is also meant to instantly revive, tone tired eyes and reduce puffiness and dark circles. I’m afraid none of that happened which is not surprising as most of these results would be linked to the “cool” effect which I didn’t feel.

Bear in mind also that there are some that suggest that any cooling or heating, tingling or other sensation on the skin is an unnatural skin response and can lead to damage of the skin barrier and therefore, leading to skin sensitivity. I will explore in a science based post whether this is true or not but shocking the skin with difference heat-cooling responses is definitely not needed.

This product contains some nice ingredients including hyaluronic acid but nothing so amazing to be worth the special buy. It is fragrance, wheat and paraben free and the brand is against animal testing.

This 15mL standard plastic tube with a nozzle is a full size product which retails for £24.95. A price definitely too steep. This really didn’t work for me and although it might work for you, I believe you could get a better product for that price. At least though it has a floral scent that is pleasant. SCORE = 6/10

Laritzy Cosmetics Shade Stix in colour Aloha

I love contour or bronzer sticks because I have massive pores which get revealed again if I use a brush to apply products. As a result, sliding a contour stick on the face and then blending with a sponge is a solution that works well for me.

However, proper brown coloured contour or bronzer sticks are very hard to find as most of them tend to have an off-orange tone to them or are too dark for my super pale complexion.

This contour stick glides effortlessly, blends really easily and the colour is buildable. However, the colour didn’t work for me as I though it has a slight orange or perhaps too light brown tint to it. This might depend on what tone your skin is to begin with.

The contour stick doesn’t smell of anything (you can smell the plastic packaging a little) and lasts for 12M. This is a full size product which retails for £18. Whether the money is worth it or not heavily depends on whether this colour works for your skin tone. SCORE = 7/10

Novex Mystic Black Deep Hair Mask

When I first saw this product I though it was a tub of chewing gums. Is it just me? This product doesn’t look the part, the packaging design and branding looks a little cheap and cheeky.

All you are meant to do is apply this on clean damp hair, leave for 10 minutes and rinse off. It is very easy to use, if you don’t mind waiting in the shower for 10 minutes and the product smells nice but is a little bit on the heavily scented cream side.

Novex Mystic Black Deep Hair Mask 3_20180625114937413

It has a white cream, partially transparent consistency and it feels nice on the hair. This hair mask contains Baobab oil and is meant to moisturise but it is difficult to know whether it does or not without laboratory testing.

Overall, the ingredients are not that interesting but this mask is free from parabens, sulphates and silicones.

This hair mask lasts for 12M and is a travel size, 100ml, tub. A full size 1kg tub retails for £11.95 which is incredibly cheap. However, there are a lot more nourishing hair masks or even hair conditioners out there. SCORE = 6/10

Glossybox June 2018 4_20180625115715699

Overall, this month’s Glossybox has some hits and misses but was overall very good for it’s intended purpose: beauty product discovery. I loved that it contained a tool (razor) too and not just skincare and makeup.

Initial box score, in terms of products and first feelings = 7/10

Overall box score after product testing (a sum of product scores) = 7.6/10

Star product = Nip + Fab Glycolic Scrub Fix
