Beauty Product Discovery – Glossybox Beauty Box July 2018 – Unboxing and Product Reviews

This month’s Glossybox was a specially designed box with a sea print and a little quote on the side reading “Happiness comes in waves”. I think it’s one of those box designs that were better on paper than in practice. I’m really not sure whether I like it or not, it’s a love hate relationship. I love the fishes and silver details but some of the imagery looks a bit odd to me.

The theme this month was “beach babe essentials” which at least matches the box design and month but I don’t think it matches all the items contained. Nevertheless, it seems that beauty boxes in general have a tough time keeping a theme with all products contained, or I just don’t get it! It does make me wonder though what the point to the themes is, other than the beautiful outer boxes, if not all of the items match.

This month’s box contained 6 products (1 extra), of which 3 were full size, other 2 were deluxe/travel size and one was an extra sample. The products were, as seen in the picture, from left to right: a sun lotion, a toothpaste, a hair spray, a brush, a mascara and hair mask.

Let’s have a look at the products in more detail. These are short reviews that cover first impressions and experiences from using the products. For full reviews, including ingredient analysis and if I would recommend a product or not, check out: Bonds of Beauty (all articles here). Bear in mind that these are my personal opinions and that beauty is a very personal thing, we all have different skin, requirements and biological build which can influence things. What worked for me might not work for you and vice versa, please leave your comments below!

Hawaiia Tropic Duo Defence Sun Lotion SPF 30

This is the little extra item in this month’s box and so it’s ok if it’s just a one-off sample.

This cream contains SPF30, therefore has UV protection (both A+B), but also contains some anti-pollution compounds. This then is essentially a day cream and it has a medium thickness consistency and a white colour. It gets absorbed quickly and doesn’t leave any residues behind. It has a light scent of typical cream which is pleasant.

Unfortunately, since this was a small sample I wasn’t able to test it a few times under makeup, but since it gets absorbed quickly and doesn’t leave residues behind, it should be theoretically, ok.

It’s very hard to form a solid opinion and score an item after 1-2 uses, which is one of the reasons why samples in beauty boxes are not a good idea. How would you know for sure if you want to buy this or not? Anyhow, I thought that overall this was a good product. SCORE = 8/10

Regenerate Enamel Science Advanced Toothpaste

I received this item exactly a year ago in the Look Fantastic July 2017 box.

This toothpaste arrived sealed which is lovely. It is supposed to be an advanced toothpaste that repairs your tooth’s enamel, to an extent, by reversing the erosion process. Like any other toothpaste it smells fresh and feels like a typical toothpaste.

I can’t say that I noticed any “repair” but this is the sort of thing that even if it works it is done on a molecular level so you wouldn’t always notice or at least not right away. You might get an improvement in the “cold” or “warm” feeling on your teeth. The packaging is a standard tube and the branding is very clear.

There isn’t much writing on it at the front, it has a fair amount of white space which makes it look quite clinical. But I guess that is what you want and expect from a toothpaste. It looks the part for sure.

My opinion on this product hasn’t really changed since last year but at the same time I also haven’t used this product since. SCORE = 7/10.

Senhor Do Bonfim Sea Water Hair Spray

This hair spray is meant to enhance your curls without using any heat. You are meant to spray it on dump hair and you can twist the hair for some added curliness. However, you can also use it directly on dry hair.

The bottle is plastic and although it looks really cute, with it’s pink sea shell design, I was surprised to find out that it is a full size product. This bottle contains only 50mL of hair spray and retails for £16. The price seems a little steep to me.

Nevertheless, the pump works well and the product is very easy to use. The spray has a sweet, cream meets hairspray type of scent which is pleasurable.

It contains 9 ingredients, one of which being Algae, which I guess is one of the suspects that will give you those beach curls.

This spray worked for me but it was more waves than curls however, bear in mind that I have thick unruly hair and you might have a better chance with it.

It was a cute product that smelled nice and gave some waves but to be honest so does washing your hair and letting it air dry and overall, I just don’t think it’s worth the cash. SCORE = 6/10

Inuwet Cheek Shell Brush

This brush looks super cute. I love the mermaid-shell vibe and look, and the vibrant blue green colour.

The brush is soft, works and cleans well. I initially thought that the design is more for looks than function but I actually ended up liking it for highlighting. You can also use it for bronzer or contouring and any other function really that works for you. If you read any of my posts before, you’d know that I don’t believe in defining what a brush should do, we all have different makeup skills and techniques so, use it as it fits you best.

It’s a little cheesy but it’s the little things in life sometimes that make you smile in the morning and this brush cheers me up.

This brush is vegan friendly and cruelty free. It is a full size product and retails for £13.20 which is a reasonable price considering it’s a designed brush. SCORE = 9/10

Oriflane The One 5-in-1 Wonder Lash Mascara

This mascara initially looks a little cheap with it’s plastic packaging, colour scheme and simple branding. The plastic wand also doesn’t help.

However, this mascara worked must better than I expected. It creates long but thin lashes and it keeps them up all day. It doesn’t smudge and it doesn’t clump up the lashes.

The wand has two different sides to it, a shorter and longer one. You are meant to use the shorter one first that should lift and sculpt your lashes and then use the longer one to lengthen and define. Quite frankly I didn’t see any difference between the two sides, they both did the same thing which makes complete sense as both sides are immersed in the same product. To say that one side would do something else than the other means that we are implying that shorter or longer wand “hairs” would give a completely different result and I’ve personally at least never experienced that. The different results usually come from the different formula.

This is not in my top 5 mascaras, despite Glossybox’s claims that one is sold every 4 seconds (how did I never hear about it then?) because it creates just long lashes. I personally would like long AND thicker lashes and so I’d still say that my favourite, Marc Jacobs Beauty Velvet Noir Influenster VoxBox – Unboxing and Review is still better.

This is a full size mascara and retails for £9. Now we are talking. Don’t get me wrong, this mascara is good (it just doesn’t thicken) and it is comparable to some of the more expensive branded ones but for half the price in some cases. For it’s price, it is definitely a good one! SCORE = 8/10

Palmers Coconut Oil Repairing Conditioner

I’ve tried the hair mask from this range and I was instantly inlove and thankfully, this conditioner is not that different.

It smells gorgeous like coconut and it creates a soft but nourished feeling hair texture. It contains vitamin E, coconut oil, sunflower oil, kelp extract, argan oil, monoi oil and other goodies.

It is sulphate, paraben, phthalate, mineral oil, gluten and dye free and is appropriate for dry, damaged and colour treated hair.

The brand is against animal testing and their products are formulated with ethically and sustainably sourced ingredients.

This 50mL travel size tube retails for £1.99 which is a great price. SCORE = 9/10

Glossybox July 2018 9_20180711095221677

Overall, this month’s box design and theme had potential but I felt that it was a little underwhelming. Not all items followed the “beach essentials” theme but 3 of them definitely did. I loved the brush and the hair conditioner and although one of the items was a sample, it was nice to try out a sixth item, even if just for two times.

Initial box score, in terms of products and first feelings = 7/10

Overall box score after product testing (average of product scores) = 7.8/10

Star product = Palmers Coconut Oil Repairing Conditioner
