Beauty Product Discovery – Look Fantastic Beauty Box August 2018 – Unboxing and Product Reviews

The Look Fantastic beauty box was the first to arrive this month, again, and it’s become something that I really love. It’s a huge perk that you don’t have to wait long for this box but also the fact that it is consistent. So far, with the exception of Januray 2018, the Look Fantastic box has always arrived first, before all the other beauty boxes I subscribe to, and by a difference.

But Look Fantastic didn’t stop there. They’ve improved a lot this year, giving the box an overall uplift, from details on how the actual boxes look to the product contained. Look Fantastic has shown improvement in 2018 and I respect that. I look forward to my Look Fantastic boxes this year so without further ado let’s have a look at the August 2018 version.

Look Fantastic August 2018 6

The theme this month was “Feel, Be, Look Fantastic” and included products that are meant to give you confidence in your beauty regime and make you feel good in your own skin. All products contained fit the theme which is almost like a miracle! Finally, we have a beauty box with a theme and everything fits the theme, even the quote at the back of the lid! This is how themed beauty boxes should be! Finally!

This beauty box always comes with a quote under the lid and this month it said: “Kalon [Ka-Lon] Beauty that is more than skin deep.”.

The Look Fantastic box also always comes with a small monthly Beauty Magazine that has a little more information about the products contained and some other featured products, and a travel size, but full edition, of the ELLE magazine. This beauty box is such an amazing value for money.

This month’s box contained 6 products (as usual). From left to right as seen in the picture below, the products were: a body wash, a boob cream, a brow gel, a lip gloss, a face wash and a skin supplement.

Let’s have a look at the products in more detail. These are short reviews that cover first impressions and experiences from using the products. For full reviews, including ingredient analysis and if I would recommend a product or not, check out: Bonds of Beauty (all articles here). Bear in mind that these are my personal opinions and that beauty is a very personal thing, we all have different skin, requirements and biological build which can influence things. Molton Brown Bath and Shower Gel in Scent Gingerlily

I love Molton Brown shower gels. They always look simple but expensive and they smell amazing.

I’ve tried this specific scent before from the Look Fantastic December 2017 calendar (it was day 11, click here to see this post) and it is as lovely as I remembered. It feels nice on the skin, washes well and it doesn’t leave any residues behind.

It smells floral (I assume that’s the gingerlily) in a refreshing way and the overall experience really makes you feel like you are treating yourself.

So what’s the catch? Well it’s definetely more expensive that your average shower gel. This 100mL bottle is a travel size and the product lasts for 12M, but the 300mL full size bottle retails for £20. It’s overall not on the high end of cosmetic price tags but it’s definetely quite expensive for a shower gel.

Ingredient-wise there are definetely some interesting ones together with some standard ones but overall, it doesn’t matter! This is a rinse off product which essentially means…it doesn’t matter how good or average the ingredients are (as long as they are not bad), they will mostly wash off.

Is it worth the cash? For an everyday use probably not but we all have to treat ourselfs every now and again. SCORE = 8/10

Mio Boob Tube and Multi Action Bust Firmer

I’ve recently wrote an in-depth review of one of the Mio body butters that I’d recommend, if you missed the post check out: Mio Future Proof Active Body Butter – In-Depth Review and Ingredient Analysis

But I’ve never tried their more unique products such as this one, the boob firmer! I must admit I was very sceptical when I saw this product as I still have not seen good scientific evidence of creams making the skin firmer, most of the time the visual effect is due to hydration. Nevertheless, I’ve given this cream a go and I throroughly enjoyed it. It was a good excuse to check my breasts for lumps, please do that ladies, and my skin defientely felt more moisturised and healthier.

I didn’t notice any brightening effect as the cream claims but the awakening orange-like scent woke me up a bit.

The white cream is very easy to spread, gets absorbed quickly and doesn’t leave any residues behind. The ingredients are also great but I question whether you need a different cream for your boobs than for the rest of your body. There isn’t any scientific literature to support that your boob skin is different, perhaps the only thing that one could argue is that you would want to avoid “bad” ingredients on an area with so many receptors, like your boobs, but I’d imagine you wouln’t want to use bad ingredients anywhere on your body anyways.

This 30mL travel size tube has a pump which is very easy to use and lasts for 6M. It might not sound like a long time but if you moisturise daily or even every other day, you will use it up in no time. The full size 100mL tube retails for £29.50.

It’s a great cream, I thoroughly enjoyed it and the ingredients are great but in my opinon there isn’t a thing called “boob cream”, it’s all a marketing play. Invest in a good body cream and you’re set. SCORE = 8/10

Blink Brow Bar (BB London) Mini Brow Build Indian Chocolate

Fun fact, I actually didn’t see this tiny little brow gel, it was lost in the ruffled paper of the box, and only after I took all the pictures for this post, started writting and then realised from the pictures in the Look Fantastic magazine that there is a missing item. That’s how small this is!

Nevertheless, it’s still better than nothing and the primary point of beauty boxes is to try out new things, not to stock up your beauty collection.

This brow gel comes in a plastic tube which looks simple but also well put together and the wand is thick. The gel came in the colour “Indian Chocolate” which is a medium brown colour. Even though I am a brunette and this colour sort of worked for me (although my eyebrows are naturally darker than my hair) I can imagine many dissapointed people out there. This is the type of product that can dissapoint many and it’s all because Look Fantastic doesn’t have a personallised beauty profile to know whether you are a brunette or a blonde etc.

Anyhow, the gel has a faint mascara-gel type of smell which you probably won’t smell unless you put the product close to your nose. Even though the wand head might look quite big, especially compared to the tiny bottle, it is actually very useful in brushing the eyebrow hairs together and delivering the product with ease.

This gel worked really well for me, my eyebrows looked fuller but not fake. It also kept my eyebrow hairs together and it dried up really quickly. It doesn’t transfer if you touch your brows and it doesn’t feel heavy or sticky. It also doesn’t smudge if you rub your eyebrows! It’s the type of product you can trust on your face, even if you forget and touch your eyebrows.

It’s overall a great product and I wish the tube was bigger! This is a little 2mL travel size version and the product lasts for 6M. The full size 4.5mL retails for £20. SCORE = 9/10

Nails Inc. Redible Glazin Over Lipgloss in Colour Love Don’t Hate

Who knew that Nails Inc. does lip glosses! It seems to be a typical trend these days, or perhaps a reasonable next step, that reputable nail varnish brands expand into lip products.

Nevertheless, this lip gloss has a gorgeous purple colour called “Love Don’t Hate” and it is streaky as it doesn’t apply equally. It never dries out and so it comes off easily with every contact to your lips but that’s acceptable since this is meant to be a lip gloss. What is a little strange though is that it looks more like a liquid lipstick that never dries up. It doesn’t have that typical thickness or glossyness that a gloss has. I thought it is a bad liquid lipstick that never dried up, until I read the packaging and the Look Fantastic magazine that said it’s a lip gloss.

And that’s where I am with this. It’s not as good as a liquid lipstick but neither like a lip gloss. So, I’m just confused. Atleast it contains vitamin E but to be honest, this is almost a standard for lip products these days.

The gloss comes in a plastic tube with a wand of standard quality. It’s very easy to apply and even though the colour transfers with every contact, even if you purse your lips together, it is pigmented enough to always have some colour left over and your lips will not look bare immediately.

This 3.4mL lasts for 18M. SCORE = 7/10

Balanceme Pure Skin Face Wash

I first tried this in the Birchbox October 2017 which means it’s been a while and yet I stil haven’t used that tube up! Not a good sign.

The tube is made of plastic of standard quality and the branding is simple and clean but it fits the natural skin care brand.

This facewash is a white, thin (like a lotion) cream that smells like…Balanceme products. I have noticed that, to me at least, all Balanceme products smell the same. If I closed my eyes and just smelled the products I wouldn’t know which one is which. It gives the brand a very strong identity in terms of, I will immediately know from the smell that this is a Balanceme product, but it strips out the individuality from each item.

Personally, I am not a fan of the smell. It has a hint of lemon but also something else and it’s almost like the product has “gone off”. It’s not a cosmetic type of smell but admittedly that works for the fact that this is a natural skin care brand.

The product did work very well though. It cleaned the face nicely without leaving any oily residues behind or stripping away the skin’s natural oils. My skin felt clean but neutral, neither dry or moisturised and I actually really like that. It did struggle a bit with a full face of makeup, there was still some makeup residue left in some places, but that’s true for many face washes and you can easily solve this by going over the face 2-3 times with more product.

This face wash is free from parabens, clea, mineral oils, sulphates, pegs, petroleum, silicones, propylene glycol, microbeads, artificial fragrances (although it still has fragrances) and colours.

I love the condition it leaves the skin after it is cleansed but personally, I really do not like the smell. SCORE =7/10

Erno Laszlo Firm & Lift Firmarine Lotion

Last time I received an Erno Laszlo product (in the Look Fantastic January 2018) I was very dissapointed as the already tiny bottle was only a third full. This time the product looks much nicer and well put together, largely because the bottle is full and the product is blue (due to a dye).

I understand that from a presentation and psychological perspective the blue addded colour works well. It supports the “Firmarine” word at the front of the bottle, it looks nice and it gives you that subconcious feeling of moisturisation. However, skin-wise, added colours don’t do anything for your skin, other than cause irritation or sensitivity to some, and so as a chemist I am not a big supporter of colouring products.

The product has a water-gel-like texture, it spreads really easily and feels moisturising on the skin. It absorbs quickly and doesn’t leave any residues behind. It also doesn’t smell of much but there is a subtle pleasant cosmetic scent if you smell closely.

The ingredients are not bad, there are definetely some good ones, like hyaluronic acid, but overall this product is not “serum worthy” either. So it’s not a full on moisturiser, not really a toner or serum…I’m having trouble placing this somewhere in my skincare routine. This is a sample or travel size and this product lasts for 12M.

A full size, 200mL roughly retails for £47 (couldn’t find a definete price) which is not worth the cash in my opinon. There are other more nourishing products, moisturiser, serums and toners, for less or equal cash. It’s not a bad product but neither top. SCORE = 7/10

Look Fantastic August 2018 7

Overall, I just want to say…finally! Finally a beauty box with a theme where all products and box ACTUALLY match the theme! Happy days! I thoroughly enjoyed this box even if it wasn’t as impressive on first glance as a box full of makeup. Goes to show you that perhaps fitting the right products with the right theme can go a long way in impressing the unboxer as it creates an experience.

Initial box score, in terms of products and first feelings = 9/10

Overall box score after product testing (average of product scores) = 7.7/10

Star product = Blink Brow Bar (BB London) Mini Brow Build Indian Chocolate
