Happy Birthday to you, Happy Birthday to youuu, Happy Birthday to Look Fantaaastiicc, Happy Birthday tooooo youuuuuu!
Well who would have thought that September would be such an exciting month for this beauty box. It’s actually the Look Fantastic beauty box 4th birthday (in the UK?) and it came with an absolutely gorgeous box purple box design with says “Birthday” at the front with white letters. It’s so gorgeous I almost wish I got this on my birthday! How exciting would that be to get a birthday beauty box on your birthday!
Anyhow, it’s the Look Fantastic Birthday box and I am super excited! Even the straw-like material inside the box was all shiny but unfortunately, the products contained, although great, did not feel special enough for the occasion. Last year, the birthday box contained a Look Fantastic brush and lollipop which might sound a little superficial, but it made the box a little more special than the other month’s. This year the box design is much, much prettier but it even contains 2 of the same products as last year! Lovely box, lovely design just the products needed a little more touch of “special”.
On the plus side, this beauty box also always comes with a small monthly Beauty Magazine that has a little more information about the products contained and some other featured products, and a travel size, but full edition, of the ELLE magazine. This beauty box is such an amazing value for money.

The box also always comes with a quote under the lid and this month it said: “Another year older & more fantastic than ever”. I have to completely agree with that, even if this month’s box contents weren’t as amazing as they could have been, the Look Fantastic box has definitely improved this year and it has become of the boxes I look forward to opening. Perhaps, that’s why now my expectations are higher!
This month’s box contained 9 products (3ish extra than usual). From left to right as seen in the picture below, the products were: a muslin cloth, a mud mask, a face cleanser balm, a strobe pencil, sweeties, a pre-shampoo hair treatment, a bath oil and a hand cream.
Let’s have a look at the products in more detail. These are short reviews that cover first impressions and experiences from using the products. For full reviews, including ingredient analysis and if I would recommend a product or not, check out: Bonds of Beauty (all articles here). Bear in mind that these are my personal opinions and that beauty is a very personal thing, we all have different skin, requirements and biological build which can influence things. What worked for me might not work for you and vice versa, please leave your comments below!
Omorovicza Ultramoor Mud Mask
I love that Look Fantastic often includes Omorovicza products but the prices for these are high! In a way this makes the box of higher value and more interesting, while also giving people the chance to try products that they can’t afford or wouldn’t choose to buy. However, I am I curious how many of these actually turn into sales.
Nevertheless, I admit I was very excited to try this product. It is meant to purify, energise and define fascial contours. While I didn’t feel that my face was defined or any lines were faded (but in all fairness I don’t have many), this mask definitely made my skin feel nice and soft. It has a grey colour and a light cream consistency that is easy to use and a faint scent of something similar to menthol.
It contains Hungarian Moor Mud and Hectorite clay amongst other ingredients and utilises a patented Hydro Mineral Transference™ delivery system, which according to Look Fantastic is said to “leave skin feeling firmer, and its anti-ageing properties help plump out fine lines and tighten collagen fibres to create an immediate lifting effect”.
It definitely felt nice and I thoroughly enjoyed it but the £68 price tag, for a full size 50mL tub, will definitely be too high for many. This product lasts for 9M. SCORE = 8/10
Evelom Cleanser & Muslin Cloth
These are the two products that Look Fantastic included last year in their birthday box but at least they are good so I’m more than happy to receive them again.
This is a multi-winning cleanser and last year Look Fantastic labelled it as “the world’s most desired cleanser”.
It is a balm cleanser with obviously the texture of a balm. It’s a waxy solid with a faint off-smell, that melts into your fingers, from your body heat, into an oily liquid that you can apply all over your face and neck. I didn’t expect this to work very well but surprisingly it worked perfectly. After you put it all over your face you are meant to wet the cloth that came with it, with warm water, and wash the balm off.
It cleaned a full face of make up completely with not a single trace of make up being left behind. It didn’t make my skin oily or dry. It just worked perfectly.
The cloth looks like any normal cloth, nothing special, but has an Eve Lom tag on it. To be honest, the cloth felt a little harsh on the skin, even though my skin is not sensitive or thin, and this was actually the only negative I can think of from the experience. It wasn’t painful or anything really bad, just felt a little harsh, but perhaps this could be seen as a partial “exfoliation” step.
This is meant to be suitable for all skin types and skin concerns. I definitely liked it a lot, it cleans much more thoroughly than a lot of cleansers out there. It is a little annoying though that you have to have the or a cloth around and then clean the cloth and hang it to dry every time. It’s an extra hustle step that you don’t have with other wet face cleansers. However, if you don’t mind that then this is a very good cleanser for sure.
A full size 200mL tub retails for £85 which admittedly is a lot for a cleanser. This product lasts for 9M. SCORE = 9/10.
Lord & Berry Strobing Pencil
I’ve received many Lord & Berry products from beauty boxes and although some of them were good, most were mediocre. I’ve also always disliked the fact that the Lord & Berry writing and design looks so similar to Bobbi Brown products and I always felt that they need to have a more characteristic identity for themselves.
However, all of this went out of the window when I tried this strobing pencil. It is just so pretty! It is essentially a highlighter pencil that writes gorgeous silver-gold lines which work perfectly for highlighting the inner corners of the eyes.
The product comes off if you wipe it but it doesn’t smudge or get everyone. This means that you can safely wear it on your eyes without being afraid that you will accidentally touch them and look sparkly all over. It will just fade away.
This 0.7g pencil is a travel size which retails for £14. This product lasts for 36M which is amazing. SCORE = 9/10
Swizzels Giant Parma Violets
This is not a beauty item and although I normally don’t like it when beauty boxes include sweets, because it is an unnecessary temptation, this time I enjoyed them in the name of the Look Fantastic Birthday.
I won’t score this item as it is not beauty related.
Philip Kingsley Elasticizer
This is a hair pre-shampoo treatment for all hair types and it is meant to condition, add-elasticity, manageability, bounce and shine.
Now, is it just me or is this product a little confusing. Is it a conditioner or a pre-shampoo treatment? Some have been using this as a conditioner and I must admit it sounds like one, but the product clearly states that this is a pre-shampoo treatment that you should leave on your hair for 10-20 minutes. So, maybe it’s a pre-shampoo mask? Nevertheless, it probably doesn’t matter when you use this or what you call it, as long as you rinse it off.
I don’t know about you but I hate waiting around the shower for hair masks and if I’m completely honest I left this on for about 5 minutes before I got bored.
It gave my hair a little more fullness and shininess and my hair is thick and hard to manage.
The tube is made of plastic of very good quality and although the design and branding is very simple, it looks elegant. The product is a white cream that doesn’t smell of much, very faintly perhaps of a cosmetic cream.
It contains castor seed oil, olive oil and hydrolysed elastin (amongst other ingredients) but it is a fairly simple, ingredient-wise, product. This is a travel size 40mL tube but the full size product of 75mL retails for £18.50.
This product lasts for 18M. SCORE = 7/10
Aromatherapy Associates Revive Morning Bath and Shower Oil
This cute little glass bottle contains oils that are meant to make you relax and enjoy your bath. All you need to do is add a cap full into your warm bath or massage it into your hands and inhale the scent deeply.
While some oils can truly transform your bath experience I didn’t feel that this one did it for me, simply because I just didn’t like the smell. This is the “Revive Morning” scent which smells bitter and off-putting to me. Nevertheless, this is personal taste so if you like more bitter type of scents give this a go.
This is 9mL bottle is a small travel size product but the full size 55mL one retails for £40.80 which might sound like a lot, but at the same time it will last you for a while. If this product truly helps you relax or enjoy your bath more then the money might be worth it. This product lasts for 6M. SCORE = 6/10
Mane ‘n Tail Original Hoof Maker Hand & Nail Cream
I’ve tried the shampoo and conditioner from this brand, in the August 2017 Look Fantastic box and I liked them. This brand became famous for its shampoos and conditioners that were used to be dedicated to pampering horses’ manes and tails. As crazy as it might sound, this type of product might make sense for people with thick and unruly hair like me! To read the review of the hair and shampoo conditioner click here.
However, I definitely didn’t know that they also do a hand and nail cream! The cream is yellow (which sadly comes from a dye) and it spreads very easily. It feels very hydrating at first and is absorbed really quickly into the skin, which is left feeling soft and hydrated.
The cream has a subtle typical hand cream smell and although it contains some interesting ingredients such as coconut oil, soybean oil, olive oil and more, bear in mind that it also contains parabens if you avoid them.
To find out whether I avoid parabens or not check out: Coffee Chat: Q&A – You asked “As a Chemist Which Ingredients do you Avoid?”
This hand cream came in the same plastic bottle with the same design as the shampoo and conditioner, which makes it very difficult to quickly distinguish between them. It is also not very convenient or practical to keep trying to squeeze a hand cream out of a bottle. However, this is a travel size product (57g) and the full size product of 170g comes in a different packaging which might be easier to use.
The best thing though is that this product retails for £7.99 which is a good price and it lasts for 24M. SCORE = 8/10
Overall, I loved the box design and the shiny straw-like material. I really like that Look Fantastic has a birthday themed box and although I liked the products contained and they would have otherwise made a nice box, I felt that for their birthday edition, this year, the special factor was missing (like for example, the Look Fantastic branded brush they included in last year’s birthday box).
Initial box score, in terms of products and first feelings = 8/10
Overall box score after product testing (average of product scores) = 7.8/10
Star product = Eve Lom Cleanser and Muslin Cloth
