Coffee Chat: Black Friday Beauty Deals

I was going to pubish a beauty box post today but somewhere between the UK-wide network problems and the bad weather, the beauty box I had in mind has not been delivered. Next week!

Nevertheless, I’ve been wanting to write a quick coffee chat about the Black Friday beauty deals and my experiences the past few years. So grab a coffee and join me in a little quick rant!


Black Friday is meant to be a, if not the biggest, day of discounts throughout the year. The beauty industry has slowly adopted it too which is great, as high-end beauty products can cost an arm and a leg these days, not to mention that high-end brands tend to have less and not as impactful discounts compared to drugstore brands. It’s also great that Black Friday is at the end of November, situated almost strategically for cheaper Christmas shopping.

All and all I like Black Friday and I have generally scored myself some bargains throughout the years. However, this was never the case with beauty products. Most brands and beauty stores (both online and in-store) offered the same discounts as they do during other times of the year or an additional 5-10% off. Atleast some were offering limited editions products that were not available at other times.

And that’s my problem. For such a hyped day that is meant to be “once in a year” type of offer, the beauty industry needs to do better. Knowing all of this, I only chose to stock up on essentials during this year’s Black Friday discounts, only to still be dissaspointed after I saw the same discounts (just 5% less) being offered as soon as 1 and 2 weeks later. It really takes away from the specialness and hype of the day and in a way it is false advertising.

The only new item I wanted to go for this year was a limited edition product, only offered on Black Friday. I won’t mention the product or the company as my intent here is not to name and shame but rather to highlight a more general issue.

This product was very hyped and you probably wanted to purchase it too. I waited patiently on my computer with a lot of coffee (and I even had my partner on the case too) until the exact time of release, only to see that “this product is unavailable”. You might say well this product was sold out within seconds but even if that was true it is inappropriate. Creating a hype and advertising for a product of special interest cannot mean that there is only a tiny amount of it available, even if it is limited edition. Such advertising click baits are considered illegal in other countries like Germany and I really wish the UK had better consumer laws. The EU unfair commercial practices directive 2005/29/EC covers similar situations but the drawback is that it’s not so much the customer that has the rights but rather the other companies that can sue a competing company for unfair business/offer behaviour, as they would be stealing customers. While I understand the need to protect company competition and monopoly I feel that we need better protection for the consumer too.

If you advertise for a certain product, deal, package, discount etc you must still have a certain availability that lasts more than seconds or a couple of minutes and is reasonably sized for the offer. Having 1 available item (or a few) and advertising them as limited edition to the mass market is generally a click bait as most of the market will simply not get one. Small offers that will fly off in seconds should at the very least be advertised specifically, as for example, “only 10 available”.

In case you are wondering, I never saw that product as being available at all and I even kept checking for hours and days afterwards, in case it was a website glitch. As far as I can tell that product never even existed.

Overall, beauty Black Friday leaves a lot to be desired and I really hope that the beauty industry sees that.

  1. I actually bought a lot of stuff on Black Friday, probably too many. However, I was also disappointed with how ‘small’ some of the discounts were. Of course you get tons of emails every day with “amazing black friday discounts” but it’s nothing to write home about.
    I thought Beauty Bay really delivered with their 30% off for three weeks and I actually did most of my BF shopping on there.
    I was also expecting Cult Beauty and Pixi to do something out of the ordinary so that I could restock on my beloved Double Cleanse, but it was sold out on CB and full price on Pixi…. I also feel very meh about it this year. Seems like there’s so much more going on in the US sales wise.

    • 30-35% off was also what the UK offered mostly but that’s just not good enough for me. There are constant 20-25% off on the online beauty retailers I buy from so another 5 or 10% is not that special and also not unique to the entire year sadly.

      • Oh yeah CB does 15-25 almost all year round. I did place an order on Colourpop, but, as usual lost all the money I’d saved thanks to these bloody customs fees.

  2. I feel your pain. Not trying to be greedy just think that the offers should be propotional to the marketing and hype they create.
