Beauty Product Discovery – Glossybox Beauty Box January 2019 – Unboxing and Product Reviews

First Glossybox of the year and I must say, I wasn’t thrilled. Not a bad box and not bad products but it just missed that little wow factor.

This month’s theme was “beauty products that’ll make keeping our beauty resolutions easy” which is great but it really depends on what your resolutions are!

This month’s box contained 5 products as always, of which 3 were full size and the other 2 were travel size. The products were, as seen in the picture, from left to right: a hair conditioner, a makeup brush, a night cream, dry shampoo and a facial foaming gel.

Let’s have a look at the products in more detail. These are short reviews that cover first impressions and experiences from using the products. For full reviews, including ingredient analysis and if I would recommend a product or not, check out: Bonds of Beauty (all articles here). Bear in mind that these are my personal opinions and that beauty is a very personal thing, we all have different skin, requirements and biological build which can influence things. What worked for me might not work for you and vice versa, please leave your comments below!

Hask Argan Oil Repairing Deep Conditioner

This conditioner is meant to straighten, restore and smooth dry and damaged hair. However, although it’s called a conditioner, it’s meant to be used more like a hair mask, as you are supposed to leave the product on for 10 minutes before rinsing.

This product smells nice and was easy to use. My thick hair felt a little calmer and smoother but that’s about it.

However, the ingredients of this conditioner are good and this product has the potential to positively impact your hair when used frequently. The only drawback is the fact that all the good ingredients contained are all listed after parfum, which means that they are contained in tiny amounts. This doesn’t immediately mean that this product doesn’t work, as sometimes you only need a tiny amount, but it adds some disappointment and might be the reason why I didn’t get as amazing of results as the ingredient list would “promise”.

This is a full size but one-use hair mask which retails for £2.49 per satchel and might be a product worth trying if your new year resolution was to use more hair masks. SCORE = 7/10

Maybelline Dream Blender Foundation Sponge

I love makeup sponges but I’m not a fan of the “sponge on a stick” concept.

This sponge, like other “sponge on a stick” products I’ve tried, works well but it just doesn’t feel comfortable for me to use.

This is meant to be a foundation sponge and although it works well, it’s not as good as the Real Techniques Miracle Complexion sponge (the orange one). Nevertheless, it works best for under eye applications of concealer, even though it’s labelled to be a foundation sponge. In practice, it really doesn’t matter what you use it for and like with any beauty tool, just find an application that feels comfortable for you and works with your face features.

Nothing wrong with this product, just not my cup of tea. This sponge retails for £4.99. SCORE = 8/10

Avant Skincare Deluxe Hyaluronic Acid Vivifying Face & Eye Cream

This night cream has an off white colour, is very easy to spread and is absorbed by the skin quickly without leaving any residues behind. It has a cosmetic scent which is pleasant and it contains fragrance.

While some ingredients are definitely good the rest are fairly standard, meaning that this is not the best night cream your money could buy, but definitely also not the worst. However, the price tag of £98 for this 50mL tube is unfounded, there are other cheaper creams that will provide you with better skincare.

On the plus side, my skin felt nice, soft and hydrated after using this cream. I’m not sure where the large price tag is coming from but the product also doesn’t look the part (the tube design is a little boring), although at least it comes in a tube and not a jar. Kudos to Glossybox though for including such an expensive product!

This product is carbomer and paraben free and lasts for 12M. SCORE = 7/10

Batiste Rethink Dry Shampoo & Volume

I love Batiste shampoos, they are cheap and they work well. What else could you ask from such product?

This new Batiste dry shampoo is meant to give you show stopping volume. It works as well as the other Batiste shampoos and it smells clean and floral at the same type.

All you need to do is apply it on the roots of your hair (spray from a distance) and comb it away so that most oils are picked up. No rinsing required.

It really does give you another day or two without having to wash your hair and it picks up oils well. It also gave my hair quite a bit of volume, although I’m not sure if it was large enough to call it a show stopper.

Nevertheless, this product works well and does what it says. One more great dry shampoo from Batiste. This shampoo even contains Oryza rice starch, keratin and hydrolysed collagen.

This 50mL bottle is a travel size (£1.5) but the full size 400mL retails for £4.99. Everyone should have a Batiste dry shampoo at their disposal. SCORE = 10/10

-417 Facial Micro Luffa Foaming Gel

20190112_093639This foaming gel cleanser cleans the skin well and even exfoliates. It removed a full face of makeup after 2 washing cycles (like any other cleanser) and it left my skin feeling clean but not stripped.

This clear gel cleanser has a noticeable fresh off smell that is mostly pleasant. The exfoliation is very subtle (by the sea salt contained) and the entire product dissolves and washes away with water.

This 100mL tube retails for £13.31, is paraben and mineral oil free as well as vegan. SCORE = 7/10

glossybox january 2019 4_20190114094914128

Overall, this month’s Glossybox wasn’t bad and the products contained were all interesting. However, it lacked the wow or excitement factor and perhaps they should have split these items into different boxes, and mixed with makeup items, instead of all of them together in one. Nevertheless, this box was value for money, as always.

Initial box score, in terms of products and first feelings = 6/10

Overall box score after product testing (average of product scores) =7.8/10

Star product = Batiste Rethink Dry Shampoo & Volume
