Beauty Product Discovery – Cohorted Beauty Box February 2019 – Unboxing and Product Reviews

Last beauty box for the love month, February, and while Glossybox and Look Fantastic where slightly disappointing, Cohorted was strong this month!

Cohorted doesn’t really follow themes but the editorial intro usually describes what they were going for, which this month was “little indulgence”. It definitely suits the month and who wouldn’t like a little indulgence?

The Cohorted box was as always the standard black, square box that closes magnetically and ties with a ribbon. The box also came with its monthly, small beauty magazine (about 30 pages) that tells you a little bit more about each product and some featured products or artists.

Cohorted February 2019 contained 8 products, of which 6 were full size, 1 travel size and 1 sample. From left to right as seen in the picture: a hair mouse, an eyeliner, a lipstick, a mascara, a liquid eyeliner, a cleansing balm, a perfume sample and a hair spray.

Let’s have a look at the products in more detail. These are short reviews that cover first impressions and experiences from using the products. For full reviews, including ingredient analysis and if I would recommend a product or not, check out: Bonds of Beauty (all articles here). Bear in mind that these are my personal opinions and that beauty is a very personal thing, we all have different skin, requirements and biological build which can influence things. Percy & Reed Abundantly Bouncy Volumising Mouse

Cohorted has included Percy & Reed products before and that’s great!

This one is a hair mousse which you are meant to apply to towel dried hair in order to create some volume. The product bottle looks and feels luxurious. The mousse is more of a foam than a silky mousse but it has a nice refreshing smell and it doesn’t feel heavy or sticky on the hair.

The product adds volume to the hair and although this might be amazing for some, for me it’s an absolute no-no. Cohorted doesn’t have a personal beauty profile and for that high £35 a month subscription price, it is a shame to get products that you won’t really use.

The ingredients of the product are very simple but nothing really especially hair nourishing, as expected by most hair products anyways. This 200mL bottle is a full size which retails for £12. SCORE = 7/10

Chanel Eye Definer in Colour 89

This gorgeous looking eye liner has a lovely grey but glittery colour which creates defined but not too aggressive or dark looks.

It works well and lasts all day but it’s not waterproof and it comes off when rubbed, like any eyeliner really. It feels soft and glides effortlessly on the eyes. It comes with a little rubber on the opposite side that you are meant to use for shading, however, it didn’t work for me at all. The rubber is so stiff that it just deletes the line instead or smoking it out. However, if you add a couple of layers and rub them out every time, you will get a nice, grey smoky effect.

This is a full size eye liner which lasts for 18M and retails for £20. SCORE = 8/10

Too Faced La Crème Lipstick in 90210hhh

Well if February isn’t the month for a good red lipstick then when? Cohorted is scoring so many brownie points for including this!

The Too Faced packaging is as always super cute, elegant and beautiful. The almost pure red colour, with a very strange name, of the lipstick is absolutely beautiful and it feels creamy on the lips. It doesn’t keep the lips specifically moisturised but neither dry.

It lasts for a while but does come off when drinking and eating, like any other lipstick. It contains some interesting ingredients, like lotus flower and peptides, and is overall a great lipstick to have.

This 3g lipstick lasts for 12M and retails for £22. SCORE = 9/10

Lord & Berry Scuba Pro Waterproof Mascara

If there is one item that beauty boxes contain a lot, a bit too much if you ask me, is mascaras! However, it’s almost never a waterproof one so this was still interesting to try.

The packaging is very simple but yet feels expensive. The brush is medium sized with hair bristles. The mascara itself has a more pleasant smell than typical mascaras but still closely related to a mascara scent.

It creates long beautiful eye lashes but not thicker ones. It lasts for hours but the lashes do slowly fall lower during the course of the day. It doesn’t look very natural, it comes off as bits sometimes and some hairs will be more coated than others, even if you go over them a couple of times.

It is truly waterproof to an extent, although when wet the lashes might become heavy and fall lower. However, the mascara ink didn’t run off when I splashed my face with water, although it did come off on it’s own when i showered.

This is a full size mascara, 7mL, which lasts for 6M and retails for £16. SCORE = 8/10

Lord & Berry Shodo Stylographic Eyeliner

Two products of the same type in the same beauty box, is not always a good idea, but items like eyeliners are heavily used by many and so will not go to waste.

This liquid eyeliner looks nice but the felt pen here is a great example of why I strongly believe that brush liquid liners are superior. It is hard to control, even for me and I’ve been doing a line on my eyes daily for about 20 years now, and it doesn’t write a solid black line. You will have to go over the line a few times in order to make it solid and well, that’s just recipe for disaster. The least effort or re-touching you put in a line the better and smoother it will look. The picture of the right shows 2 swatches from using 1 stroke of the liner and 1 with multiple.

This is a full size liner, 0.55mL, which lasts for 6M and retails for £18. I have to say, the Nyx Professional Matte Liquid Eyeliner is just superior and half the price! SCORE = 5/10

Elemis Pro-Collagen Cleansing Balm

I was never big on cleansing balms because they tend to leave the skin a little oily and feeling like I need to wash it again. However, I recently discovered the Clinique Take the Day Away Balm and I am absolutely in love.

As a result, I was very intrigued by the Elemis balm because it is actually almost the opposite to the Clinique one.  It cleans well, as the Clinique, but it leaves the skin a little, tiny bit oily, nowhere near like other cleansing balms though. The biggest difference, however, is the ingredient list. The Elemis balm contains a huge cocktail of ingredient goodies and in this term, it is by far superior to the Clinique one. However, it is highly debatable whether it is really that much more skincare beneficial, as rinse off products often don’t have the formulation or time for their ingredients to go into the skin. Essentially, you are most likely rinsing off most of the ingredient goodies down the drain, which is not only a shame but also a waste of money. However, the is no denying that the ingredient list of this product makes it quite interesting.

The Elemis balm contains fragrance and has a strong lemon-like scent. This 20g jar is a travel size, but the full size, 105g, retails or £43 and lasts for 6M. SCORE = 9/10

Agent Proocateur Pure Aphrodisiaque

This was a little extra, a sample sized perfume and it was great to try out. It has a subtle sweet rose type of scent but not quite and is suitable even for day or professional wear. I won’t score this item as scent is a matter of personal choice but I thought it was a very nice perfume!

Percy & Reed Dry Instant Volumising Spray

Another Percy & Reed product which personally I do not mind at all, but sadly, another volumising product. This is really not great strategy by Cohorted since they don’t have a personal beauty profile, at least they should aim to include two different types of products so that most people find something they will use in the box. Otherwise, you will get only extreme cases where some people might be very happy, and others like me who battle volume, are very disappointed.

Nevertheless, this product is also very beautiful and has the typical brand design. It looks and feels expensive but it’s not that bad, which is great.  The spray has a typical hair spray scent but in a positive way and it adds volume to dry hair. It doesn’t feel sticky or heavy and the hair looks natural.

The ingredient list again is not very impressive but that is true for almost all hair products out there. This 200mL bottle is a full size which retails for £15. SCORE = 8/10

Cohorted February 2019 5_20190218131956305

Overall, this month’s Cohorted included a lot of exciting products and full size ones as well. I’m not sure if this is the love beauty box I was expecting but it was nevertheless, a very nice box to receive and the red lipstick just made it even more exciting. This box was a great value for money £113 vs £35 payed.

Initial box score, in terms of products and first feelings = 9/10

Overall box score after product testing (average of product scores) = 7.7/10

Star product = Too Faced La Crème Lipstick in 90210hhh
