Look Fantastic was once again the first beauty box to arrive this month and it’s a feature that I love about it. Beginning of the month and Look Fantastic is at your doorstep., whereas other beauty boxes usually arrive during the middle to end of the month. It might not seem that it matters, the box will arrive when it arrives, nothing is lost, but it sort of does. Look Fantastic comes with the freshness and excitement of a new month whereas the rest leave you waiting.
The theme this month was “Urban Beauty” and it was explained as skincare solutions and makeup that will help us survive a spring in the city. The products contained fit the theme, but to be fair anything would. There are no products that would specially help you survive spring in the city more than others. Look Fantastic has been doing this a lot the past year or two, fancy themes that sound good but are not fully embraced or well executed. But I am always giving it another chance because the themes do sound interesting, so let’s hope for something better from next month’s theme, “Around the World”.
This beauty box always comes with a quote under the lid and this month it said: “Confidence is the ultimate shield”. I always love the quotes and they also tend to fit the theme much more than the products contained.
The Look Fantastic box also always comes with a small monthly Beauty Magazine that has a little more information about the products contained and some other featured products, and a travel size, but full edition, of the ELLE magazine. This beauty box is such an amazing value for money. To subscribe to Look Fantastic and get £5 off your first box click here.
I love that this month’s box colour is not just random. It was picked to celebrate Pantone’s 2019 colour of the year called, Living Coral and it definitely fits the May month. This month’s box contained 6 products.
Let’s have a look at the products in more detail. These are short reviews that cover first impressions and experiences from using the products. For full reviews, including ingredient analysis and if I would recommend a product or not, check out: Beauty In-depth Reviews & Ingredient Analysis (all articles here). Bear in mind that these are my personal opinions and that beauty is a very personal thing, we all have different skin, requirements and biological build which can influence things. What worked for me might not work for you and vice versa, please leave your comments below
Polåar Northern Light Cream
This is a cream that you can use both day and night as it doesn’t contain SPF. It is best for normal to dry skin but you can use it if you are oily too, at night perhaps and not under makeup.
It contains some ingredient goodies such as almond oil, vitamin C & E, shea butter, Aloe extract, sunflower seed oil and more. It’s definitely not a bad cream ingredient-wise, although it sadly contains fragrance, but it is not an all rounded cream either. The cream itself has a pale orange colour which comes from dyes, another unnecessary ingredient.
The cream feels thick but spreads easily and feels deeply hydrating. It has a subtle floral cosmetic scent which is pleasant. It takes a moment for it to be absorbed but it does so eventually, fully, without leaving any residues behind.
This 30mL tube is a travel size which retails for £17.50. The product lasts for 12M. SCORE = 8/10
Mellow Gel Lip Pencil in Colour Aria
I love lip pencils but I hate sharpening them and unfortunately this is one of those types of pencils. However, the colour is an orangey brown which on paper should be able to be used with many lipsticks, both browns and pinks, but in practise the orange hint makes it look a little dirty. This will be very dependant on your skin colour though, as well as your lip colour, but if you are very pale white like me, this might not be the colour that brings the most out of you.
The pencil is very buttery and writes smoothly. It works really well and is of good quality.
Ingredient-wise there isn’t a lot of value to this product but hey, it’s a lip liner! It lasts for 12M and retails for £10.50, much cheaper than a lot of lip liners out there. SCORE = 8/10
Wella Professionals Invigo Nutri-Enrich Deep Nourishing Mask
This hair mask promises to nourish your hair and even contains some nice ingredients such as vitamin E. However, overall the mask’s ingredients are not that impressive and even if they were, you’d have to take them with a pinch of salt. Remember that hair out of the follicle is dead and there is only so much nourishment/texture change you can do. This mask also contains parabens if you wish to avoid them.
However, I love that this mask is very quick and painless, you only have to wait 5 minutes for it. I’d love to do more hair masks but I really can’t stand that 15-20 minute wait in the shower!
This hair mask is a white cream with a fruity hair mask scent.
Unfortunatetly, it didn’t really give me any noticeable results. On the plus side, this mask costs only £2.78 for a tube of 30mL which was a one use for my very long hair. If you don’t have long hair then this mask lasts for 12M, but you won’t get more than 1-2 uses out of this travel size tube. SCORE = 6/10
Avant Skincare 8 Hour Anti-Oxidising And Retexturing Hyaluronic Facial Serum
This cream can also be used both day and night, as it lacks SPF. However, its very thin and almost watery texture is more suited for dry to normal skin than the oily type.
The cream smells nice, like a light cucumber cream, but it takes a moment to be fully absorbed, even by dry skin. The skin doesn’t feel deeply moisturised after but neither dry.
There are plenty good ingredients in it, including hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, retinol and more. At the same time though, it still lacks some skincare basics such as ceramides for example. Nevertheless, it’s not a bad cream but sadly it contains fragrance.
It lasts for 12M and a 30mL tube retails for £89. The price is not worth the ingredients in this cream, it’s not like it’s perfect and there are others with a smaller price tag that will give you the same or better skin nourishment. SCORE = 7/10
Minetan 3 in 1 Gradual Tan Lotion
This cream is meant to extend your tan by adding gradual tan colour to your skin.
The ingredients contained are as good as it gets for tanning products with skincare value, as this product will also moisturise and nourish your skin to an extent.
It lasts for 6M and this 30mL tube retails for £5.99. Considering the amounts you will have to use, since this is a full body product, it’s not as cheap as it sounds but at least it has a good nourishing value to it as well.
I haven’t tried this product, as I don’t have or want a tan just yet but it will be one that I will remember to use later on, so let’s hope it also works well.
Skin Chemists Rose Illuminating Glow Hydrogel Eye Pads
The Skin Chemist brand in general, contains some good products but they are often ridiculously priced, and even more so if you take into consideration their ingredients.
This eye mask is thankfully not as bad price-wise but at £6.99 for a singe use, it’s not exactly cheap either. However, what is the worst thing about this mask is the ingredients. They are just very underwhelming and not worth the price.
To make things worse, this mask didn’t give me any results which on the other hand, I wasn’t expecting anyways. I can’t say that I would recommend spending your money on this product and it angers me as Chemist that a Chemistry based brand is not going all out on good nutritious, all-rounded products. SCORE = 4/10
Overall, this month’s box wasn’t bad but at the same time it still gave me that “all travel size” products feeling that Look Fantastic seems to be stuck at. Can me have some bigger sized products please, even the box is starting to look emptier every month! On the plus side, I did enjoy trying all these products and I am looking forward to next month’s “Around the world” theme.
Initial box score, in terms of products and first feelings = 7/10
Overall box score after product testing (average of product scores) = 6.6/10
Star product = Polåar Northern Light Cream
