L’oréal Age Perfect Cleansing Wipes – In-depth Review and Ingredient Analysis

I know, I know, I’ve been writing quite a lot about makeup wipes recently, but it’s because I have been so unhappy with the ones I was using, I was trying new ones left right and centre. However, the good news is that I finally found some that although they are not perfect, I am happy enough to settle for now.

The wipes of the hour are the L’oréal Age Perfect Cleansing Wipes and yes, I’ve had a moment of a middle life crisis style panic when I realised that these wipes are targeted for the older female. However, age specific cosmetics mean nothing in practice, you can use them whatever age you are. In fact, older-age cosmetics tend to contain better ingredients because older skin needs more nutrients (because some nutrients are depleted) and the older customer has more money to pay for them. This is a generalisation and there are of course exceptions but roughly, that is the case.

Enough with the bla, let’s have a look at the L’oreal Age Perfect Cleansing Wipes in more detail. Are they worth your time and money? Let’s find out.

The L’oréal Age Perfect Cleansing Wipes come in plastic of good quality. The pack has two sealing points, a sticker that you can remove after the first use, if you like, and an outer door-like plastic seal. I kept both on and the product was perfectly moist until the very last wipe.

The actual design of the packaging is very simple but elegant and the gold colour accents give it a sense of luxury. It matches the age demographic of the product well but also all other women who want to feel like they are using a product that is not just the drugstore kind.

One pack of the L’oréal Age Perfect Cleansing Wipes contains 25 wipes and retails for £4.50. However, you can often find them on offer for £2-3 in supermarkets and drugstore shops.

They are not the cheapest wipes but nowhere near the most expensive either. They are a low to mid-range product that works as good as some of the more expensive ones.

Texture, Colour and Shape

The wipes have a square type of shape and they are perfectly moist. Neither too wet or dry.

The cloth material is soft and nice to use on the delicate face skin and the material is neither too thin or too thick. One side of the wipe is even and the other has soft little bumps of cloth. You won’t feel a difference from either side but you could use them differently.

These wipes have a lovely soft, clean and moisturising scent which comes from some of the ingredients contained but also the added fragrance. The fact that they do contain added fragrance is literally the worst thing about these wipes and the reason why I am settling with them rather than being 100% happy.

If you are not aware of why fragrance is better avoided, check out the ingredient section below.

Skin compatibility

These wipes are compatible for all skin types but the brand specifies them to be better for mature skin. As I explained in the introduction of this post, this essentially means nothing in practice, there are no ingredients that are age specific and you can use this product no matter how old you are.

Avoid using cosmetics on broken skin. If you are concerned consult with a medical doctor first.

These wipes are cruelty free and last for 3M. This is a relatively short amount of time when compared to other wipes however, it doesn’t really matter as you will use them up anywhere between a week to a month depending on usage. If you don’t use them up in 3 months it simply means you don’t like them enough and it’s time for decluttering!

Here’s what the brand says about the product:

Age Perfect Cleansing

Skin is perfectly cleansed, looks clearer and feels smoother with a lasting sensation of freshness and comfort.

Age Perfect Smoothing Wipes

Age Perfect Smoothing Cleansing Wipes have been specially developed for mature skin.

Face and eyes are perfectly cleansed, skin feels invigorated with a feeling of smoothness and comfort.

Enriched with vitamin C and magnesium, Age Perfect Smoothing Wipes deeply cleanse the face and eliminate impurities without drying out the skin.

Practicality of use – user experience

The L’oréal Age Perfect Cleansing Wipes are easy and very pleasant to use. The packaging reseals easily and keeps them moist for their lifetime.

These wipes clean very easily and well. They can even handle a face full of makeup but also small amounts of leftover dirt. They leave the skin feeling slightly moisturised which is great as many wipes out there can leave a dry after-feeling, even if you have oily skin.

These wipes contain 25 ingredients of which 13 offer some positive (some more than others), 1 potential negative and 11 irritants. The biggest let down of these wipes is the presence of fragrance which also potentially introduces a large amount sensitisers that are not necessary.

To keep this article short, I am only listing the skin nourishing or skin positive/negative ingredients and ignoring the ones that only play formulation purposes. For the full list of ingredients scroll down to the “full list of ingredients” section.

Ingredient positives:

  1. Aqua (water, eau) based formulation.
  2. Glycerin – Found naturally in the skin so can be seen as a skin replenishing ingredient. A skin conditioner that helps improve and smooth the appearance of skin. A good moisturiser that is almost always present in moisturising products.
  3. PEG-100 Stearate– A moisturiser.
  4. Rosa Gallica Extract/Rosa Gallica Flower Extract (French Rose) – Skin conditioner.
  5. Calcium Pantetheine Sulfonate – A skin conditioner. Some studies suggest that it can brighten the skin, enhance hair growth and have anti-flammatory effects.
  6. Glyceryl Stearate – A lubricant giving smooth and soft skin appearance.
Easily penetrates skin, slows water from escaping by forming barrier, anti-oxidant.
  7. Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis Oil / Sweet Almond Oil – A fragrance and skin conditioning agent that is absorbed quickly by the skin and can offer some moisturisation.
  8. Disodium Cocoamphodiacetate – A cleanser.
  9. Isopropyl Palmitate (Palm Oil) – Skin conditioner.
  10. Citric Acid– A natural preservative, can be used to even out skin tone.
  11. Xanthan gum – Skin conditioner. Holds water and improves the shelf life of the product.
  12. Cetyl Alcohol – Conditions and softens the skin. It is a fatty alcohol and so it is not perceived to be as damaging to the skin as others.
  13. Tocopherol – Refers to a class of compounds with similar activities to vitamin E. A skin conditioner, anti-oxidant and fragrance agent. Check out: Vitamins C & E – Do they work in skin care?

Ingredient negatives:

  1. Parfum (Fragrance)– This ingredient represents an undisclosed mixture of compounds that give the product scent. There’re more than 3000 molecules that fall under this category and I personally do not like that there are some ingredients that are undisclosed and hidden under this general name. Fragrance also does not offer any skin care benefit, in fact there is some evidence that it can damage the skin.

Ingredients that can cause irritation to some:

This is actually really case specific, as different people have different sensitivities and allergies. Just because a compound has been reported by some to cause sensitivity, it doesn’t mean you will have an issue. “Sensitizer” compounds being present is not a negative in my opinion, as this is the case with pretty much everything out there and funnily enough I’ve seen products that are targeted specifically for sensitive skin, containing some compounds that have been reported by some, or are known to be, sensitizers.

If you have sensitive skin or you are prone to skin sensitisation and unwanted reactions, try a little bit of this at the back of your hand first and consult a medical doctor if you are concerned.

The following compounds present in the L’oréal Age Perfect Cleansing Wipes been either proven or claimed by some to be sensitizers, irritants, allergens etc: Isopropyl Palmitate, Citric Acid, Phenoxyethanol, Myritrimonium Bromide, Linalool, Geraniol, Eugenol, Limonene, Citronellol, Benzyl Alcohol, Parfum / Fragrance.

Full list of ingredients:

Aqua/Water, Glycerin, PEG-100 Stearate, Rosa Gallica Extract / Rosa Gallica Flower Extract, Calcium Pantetheine Sulfonate, Glyceryl Stearate, Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis Oil / Sweet Almond Oil, Ammonium Polyacryldimethyltauramide / Ammonium Polyacryloyldimethyl Taurate, Disodium Cocoamphodiacetate, Disodium EDTA, Isopropyl Palmitate, Citric Acid, Xanthan Gum, Cetyl Alcohol, Tocopherol, Sodium Benzoate, Phenoxyethanol, Myritrimonium Bromide, Linalool, Geraniol, Eugenol, Limonene, Citronellol, Benzyl Alcohol, Parfum / Fragrance, (F.I.L. B164751/4).

Although this product is not ideal, because it contains fragrance which could irritate and potentially damage skin, it is really good otherwise. It hurts to say though that these wipes actually smell really nice and although my skincare products usually don’t contain fragrance, I liked it in this one. I feel bad for saying it!

The L’oréal Age Perfect Cleansing Wipes clean well and can even handle a full face of makeup with ease, while leaving the skin feeling slightly moisturised. If it wasn’t for the fragrance these wipes would be great. Sure, they don’t contain a long list of ingredient goodies but they do contain some which help with moisturisation. Remember that cleansing products should just clean and the rest of the heavy lifting lies with your actual skincare regime.

A good product that is not too expensive and is appropriate for all ages. L’oréal just skip the fragrance next time!

    • Aw well you’re not missing on much. Wipes in general might become an extinct product as they are obviously not the most environmentally friendly.
