Tarte Mermaid Skin Serum – In-depth Review and Ingredient Analysis

Hyaluronic acid is one of the skincare must-have ingredients that your skin can never get enough of. However, it is also one of those ingredients that brands include just to make products sound better than they are.

In this post we will be looking at the Tarte Mermain Skin serum. Is it worth your money and time? Let’s find out.

Tarte Mermaid Skin Serum 2

Tarte rarely goes wrong with packaging and this product is not the exception. The serum comes in a blue bottle with a pump and a golden lid. It’s simple but yet beautiful. It looks the part and it subconsiously makes you believe that is it hydrating. Job well done.

A full size (pictures show travel size 10mL), 50mL, bottle retails for £35. It is expensive for what this product is, ingredient-wise. A big part of the price here is the Tarte brand and the mermaid theme.

Like most hyaluronic acid serums, the texture of this product is transparant thin, slightly thicker than water, liquid. It’s not really a gel which also means that there isn’t too much hyaluronic acid in it. On the other hand, the product spreads easily and feels a little sticky on the skin (not by touch, by passive feeling) which means there is at least a meaniful amount of hyaluronic acid.

This product has a very faint gel-like scent which you can only smell if you put your nose close.

This serum lasts for 6M.

Here’s what the brand says about the product:

Mermaids’ biggest beauty secret, in a bottle! A vegan, water-light hydration serum that delivers an instant, super-concentrated burst of moisture to parched skin.

  • Splashes skin with intense moisture for 12-hour hydration
  • Refreshing water-gel formula is immediately absorbed without any greasy or sticky residue
  • Loaded with complexion quenchers like hyaluronic acid, vitamin B5 & marine plant extracts to help provide powerful antioxidant defense

Always formulated without: Parabens • Mineral Oil • Phthalates • Triclosan • Sodium Lauryl Sulfate • Gluten

Practicality of use – user experience

This serum is very easy to use. It spreads easily and is absorbed quickly. Plus, it comes with a pump so there is minimum hassle!

Skin compatibility

This serum is compatible with all skin types. Do not use cosmetics on broken skin.

This serum gave me a more plump, hydrated feeling skin that felt thicker too. That is the general effect of hyaluronic acid, so it works. However, given that other than that the rest of the ingredients vs price are not really worth it as there are other hyaluronic acid serums out there, for that price or less, that also contain more nourishing ingredients on top.

It wouldn’t be ethical if we didn’t talk about the credibility of this section. It is very hard to impossible most of the time to verify the information or credibility of the sources, so please take this section with a pinch of salt unless stated otherwise. This section is not meant to be definitive and is most likely more about reputation around those subjects than credible information. Tarte is a cruelty free brand.

This serum contains just 9 ingredients of which 5 will have some benefit on your skin. It’s a very low on nourishing value serum, for a not so low price. On the plus side, it is simple enough ingredient-wise to be a good starter product for sensitive skin. Although, I would still recommend this much cheaper and more nourishing product instead: The Chemistry Brand Hyaluronic Acid Concentrate – In-Depth Review, Ingredient Analysis and a Chemist’s Verdict

Ingredient positives:

  1. Water (Aqua) based formulation.
  2. Sodium Hyaluronate – Known in the science community as “the fountain of youth” compound. Can hold up to 1000 times its weight in water, so it is a king moisturiser. Helps wounds heal faster and increases collagen production leading to younger looking skin. For more info and all the scientifically proven claims see “Hyaluronic acid – the fountain of youth?”
  3. Algae Extract – Anti-oxidant and skin replenishing as it contains multiple vitamins and minerals. However, this ingredient oxidises when exposed to air and is best not found in jar creams.
  4. Calcium Pantothenate – A skin conditioner, moisturiser, softener and humectant.
  5. Glycerin – Found naturally in the skin so can be seen as a skin replenishing ingredient. A skin conditioner that helps improve and smooth the appearance of skin. A good moisturiser that is almost always present in moisturising products.

Ingredient negatives:

Ingredients that can cause irritation to some:

This is actually really case specific, as different people have different sensitivities and allergies. Just because a compound has been reported by some to cause sensitivity, it doesn’t mean you will have an issue. “Sensitizer” compounds being present is not a negative in my opinion, as this is the case with pretty much everything out there and funnily enough I’ve seen products that are targeted specifically for sensitive skin, containing some compounds that have been reported by some, or are known to be, sensitizers.

If you have sensitive skin or you are prone to skin sensitisation and unwanted reactions, try a little bit of this at the back of your hand first and consult a medical doctor if you are concerned.

The following compounds present in this serum have been either proven or claimed by some to be sensitizers, irritants, allergens etc: Algae Extract, Phenoxyethanol.

Full list of ingredients:

Water/Aqua/Eau, hydroxyethylcellulose, sodium hyaluronate, disodium EDTA, sodium nitrate, algae extract, calcium pantothenate, glycerin, phenoxyethanol.

Tarte Mermaid Skin Serum

This serum looks great and works well but the price vs nourishing value is just not worth it. The The Chemistry Brand Hyaluronic Acid Concentrate is more nourishing, cheaper and you get 3 times more product! I’m afraid what you buy with the Tarte Mermain Skin serum is mostly the branding.
