Not all primers are equal. Too Faced Primed and Peachy Cooling Matte Skin Perfecting Primer VS This Works In Transit Camera Mask, Moisturiser & Primer.

The Too Faced Peaches and Cream Collection has reached the UK! I’ve written some posts on this collection already and for better or for worse, this is the last post regarding this collection. I’ve given this collection quite a bit of attention for a couple of reasons: (a)    It is an all matte collection which speaks volumes to me as an oily skin type, (b)   but it is also arguably one of the prettiest collections ever made and (c)  of course it isRead more

Cohorted August 2017 Beauty Subscription Box – Unboxing and Product Reviews

Where did August go? It feels like it just flew by! At least, with every month end I get to open a lovely posh beauty box, Cohorted. I always leave the Cohorted box review last because it is a pre-order box and you wouldn’t be able to get this month’s box anyways. I must admit it is also my favourite subscription beauty box as it always has branded products (I am a sucker for brands!) and the products are almostRead more

Honey in cosmetics – Is it worth seeking out?

Honey is one of those ingredients that don’t need much introduction. It is one of the most used substances in the world, arguably one of the oldest cosmetic ingredients throughout human history. [1] In fact there are reports that it was used even as far back as 4500 BC in Egypt, in eye cosmetics [2] and it is even known that Egyptian women used honey, mixed with sodium bicarbonate, for vaginal irrigations! [3] If you think that is incredibly bizarre,Read more

Glossybox Beauty Box August 2017 – Unboxing and Product Reviews

Glossybox August 2017 was also a collector’s edition box, like last month, and was dedicated to summer with a specific “girls just wanna have sun” theme. Girls definitely want to have sun! The box was not the usual pink Glossybox, it actually had a design which was again a lovely surprise. The box was still the same size and type but it was a baby blue colour. Both Glossybox July and August collector’s edition boxes are literally just that, lovely boxes that youRead more

Birchbox Beauty Box August 2017 – Unboxing and Product Reviews

Birchbox August 2017 was all about “mermaid vibes” which admittedly as weird as it might be I thought it was a cute, girly theme. The box design looked like a mermaid’s scales and had different shades of blue and gold to create the mermaid texture. It is a unique looking box and while I can’t really say it is ugly, it is also not the most beautiful box Birchbox ever made. The box was again a drawer type of mediumRead more

Skin whitening products might contain illegal substances

I’ve accidentally bumped onto a research paper published in the Archives of Toxicology which writes about a very worrying concept. In this paper the authors claim that not all commercialised cosmetics in European countries follow the EU regulations for safety. They went as far as picking 163 samples, specifically skin whitening products, of which 40% of them contained a potent corticosteroid clobetasol propionate and about 12% were found to contain tretinoin or hydroquinone.[1] The mentioned substances are usually found inRead more

Look Fantastic Beauty Box August 2017 – Unboxing and Product Reviews

Month after month, the Look Fantastic box still manages to be the first to arrive out of all four Beauty Boxes I subscribe to (Birchbox, Glossybox, Look Fantastic and Cohorted), way ahead of the others (a week +). Great job Look Fantastic. August’s Look Fantastic Subscription Beauty Box had a “Global Glamour” theme. I must admit the theme was very interesting and the products contained matched the theme well. They were all products from companies around the world and all are apparently productsRead more

Mineral oil in cosmetics – is it worth seeking out?

Mineral oil is a derivative of petroleum. It is scientifically generally accepted that petroleum is generated from heating fossilised organic material that decomposed over the years in the absence of oxygen, like for example deep in the sea, and is possibly the product of dead prehistoric zooplankton, algae and other organisms. [2] As a result, petroleum and by extend mineral oil are considered to be natural materials. As you can imagine, heating and decomposition of dead organisms will result inRead more

What are cosmeceuticals?

You probably have already come across the word “cosmeceutical” but have you ever wondered what it means or actually is? In simple terms, it is a combination of the two words “cosmetic” and “pharmaceutical”. Cosmeceutical products have properties from both categories, they are primarily cosmetic products that have some added benefit or drug-like activity without actually being drugs. They are the middle point if you like between cosmetics and pharmaceuticals. For example, a moisturising cream that has added vitamin ERead more

What is the purpose of grooming and can cosmetics alter the perception of ourselves?

In a previous post I investigated “Why do we use make up and…should we?” and found, through various research studies by different disciplines, that make up actually gives us a sense of individuality. And personally, I agree. But have you ever thought if cosmetics, to be general, alter the perception of ourselves? Of course they influence the way others perceive us, but what about how we perceive ourselves? I’ve always found the assumption, especially by some men, that we wearRead more
